The Curse of Being a Young Driver

By: Jason Speedie

Even if you are a considerate and careful driver, if you are under twenty-five you will usually pay more for your car insurance than older drivers. Statistics show that young drivers are more often involved in serious accidents than older drivers, so young people are considered high risk drivers. Roughly one in five young drivers will crash within the first year of passing the driving test.

Your car insurance costs will come down once you are over twenty-five if have no driving convictions and you have not made any claims. Statistics show that drivers between fifty and seventy years of age are less likely to have accidents, so as you approach that age range your car insurance premiums will come down.

If you are under twenty-five and you don't want to pay a lot for your car insurance, it might be worth taking an advanced driving course, for example Pass Plus. Some insurance companies offer discounts to drivers who complete advanced driving courses. These courses are an opportunity to learn how to drive defensively, in bad conditions and on roads that you cannot drive on while you are learning like the motorway. There are other advanced driving courses to teach you what to do, for example, in a skid, and how to get out of the situation safely.

If you haven't got the money to pay a high car insurance premium, avoid getting a really powerful or sporty car. A small engine is safest for inexperienced drivers. Also, if you do bump a second hand car you might be able to live with a few scratches on the paintwork, but damage to a brand new car will reduce the value when you go to sell it on, or will cost money to repair. Even if you claim for the costs of repairs, you will lose out because your premium will be affected in the future.

Other steps you can take to get a lower insurance premium include getting a car with an engine immobiliser. If your parents are prepared to add you onto their policy it can be cheaper than you getting separate car insurance. Some insurance companies take the time you are named on another person's policy into consideration towards your own no claims discount, so look out for this option in the terms and conditions.

There are specialist young driver insurance companies, and some companies have special young driver policies. These are worth looking at, but they are not always cheaper than ordinary policies from other companies, so do shop around and don't accept the first quote you get.

Young women make fewer big car insurance claims than young men and are less likely to cause serious accidents. This difference in risk will be taken into account when your quote is calculated. There are some insurers that only insure female drivers, and young women can get good savings by using these companies.

Shop around for you car insurance, for example online with a price comparison website. Do be careful to check that the level of cover is appropriate for you though, and don't be fixated on price alone. For a slightly higher premium, there can be a big difference in service, so if you would need a hire car to get to work for example, you may wish to pay a little more for a policy that includes this if your car is stolen or out of action because of an accident.
