Enviroment Management is far more than managing the environment around us; it involves successfully helping all relationships to work together. Both the living and non living environment works together to create a harmonious working platform, which aids everything to move forward, develop and attain ever better results.A successfully administered Enviroment Management System (EMS) can help manage resources, improve reliability, and increase the credibility of a company's environmental policy. It allows customers to see the commitment that an organization has to its responsibilities. Having the EMS certified through ISO 14001 gives international accreditation, further enhancing image.Further than this however, there are many other benefits to be had from an Enviroment Management System across all levels of a business. From being able to meet compliance issues more coherently, to opening other avenues of finance which may not have otherwise been accessible.Implementing and maintaining an EMS will ensure better regulatory compliance, not only in ensuring these responsibilities are met, but are easier to manage. It could be more far reaching than this too, resulting in lighter regulation through reduced fees or charges imposed from regulatory bodies, who themselves can save costs through interrogation already done.A well managed and well publicized Enviroment Management System will also act, in its own right, as a marketing tool. A Businesses' credentials will be improved markedly, which in turn can be used to advertising means and methods. This will increase sales of course, though opportunities will come from other avenues too. Notably from departments within the government, who are charged with concentrating on environmentally friendly operations to lead their ideals. At a bottom line level too, cost efficiencies will be seen. A positive side effect of enviroment management is the ability to manage resources far more effectively. Waste plans are improved; not only how to manage waste, but to reduce on wastage from the top down. Reduced waste equates to reduced costs; coupled with maximized savings profit streams can improve greatly.Alongside this increased funding, finance from external sources will likely be easier to come by. Once more, banks and financial organizations are more willing to do business with a company with environmentally friendly credentials but, more than this, as they are likely to be more robust entities in the future, they present a lesser risk.It is possible to self certify an EMS, but for recognition externally, third party certification is needed. This allows all stakeholders to have the reassurance needed, that all information supplied is correct and verifiable.Once certification has been achieved however, it is only the start of the journey. Enviroment Management System's need to be constantly monitored and updated as trends, news and events dictate. To remain valid for ISO 14001 accreditation for example, proof needs to be demonstrated that regular reviews and improvement schedules are in place. The best way to manage these reviews is through internal auditing, which can ensure that improvement measures are being adhered to and implemented. To this end, there needs to be complete buy-in from all senior management, from roll out stage and on, whilst certain factors should also be in place.Dedicated procedures which monitor the overall effectiveness of the EMS should be published and understood, along with mechanisms that allow targets and objectives to be monitored. A reporting system needs to be put in place, with roles and responsibilities clearly defined. And finally of course, reviews need to be scheduled of the entire system, including the very procedures and mechanisms put in place.Having these systems in place is necessary of course, but knowing how to react to the findings is critical. Failing to do this will undermine rather than underpin the successfulness. Whenever an improvement is highlighted, or a failure noted, all staff should be communicated the results. All documentation should be updated, and training sessions refreshed as relevant. All reviews should be completed on a regular basis, and ideally the next event will be scheduled immediately upon completion of the last review. If significant changes, improvements and of course failures have been attended to, a separate review of this should take place at the earliest opportunity. In summary, an Enviroment Management System is similar to any other management system, such as those which manage safety or quality throughout a business. It assesses a businesses strengths and, more importantly, weaknesses which help to identify and help with managing any significant impacts. By improved efficiency, it can save costs and increase revenue streams, whilst also ensuring compliance, and helping with reducing environmental impact whilst maintaining benchmarked business ideals.
