The Basics: Do you Tweet? How to Start your Twitter account

By: Angela Chase Online Marketing Professional

Twitter is a social networking, micro-blogging website that was founded and launched in 2006. In the last 5 years, Twitter has gained over 200 million users worldwide with over 600 million "tweets" a day. Think this is a market you might want to include in you marketing? That is a resounding YES, especially if you are doing any kind of network marketing such as real estate, MLM and the like. You will want to have a blog to drive your tweets to and there is a tutorial on blogs on its way. By the time you read this, you will probably be able to do a search on my blog and find it pretty quickly.

Do you feel like you have missed the opportunity? Nope, it is never too late and if you are like I was, hesitant to join the tweeters, well the time is now. The sooner you begin building your following, the quicker you can drive traffic to your blog and broadcast your message. If you need help starting an account, it is really simple and you will find a video tutorial on my website: link below.

Once you are on Twitter, you will see that you can only type up to 140 characters in a Tweet (a short message). Before adding any friend or sending friend requests, just type something in the tweet box just to get the idea. You will feel more comfortable when it comes time for the real deal.

Great, now let's add your friends from your emails of people you know. Click on Who To Follow at the top of the page and you will see View Suggestions, Browse Interests and Find Friends. By clicking on Find Friends, you will be able to search using Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, Messenger, AOL and Linked in. In the video tutorial I show you how to use the suggestions Twitter gives you to research more people you may be interested in.

Once you have friends, you can start seeing what they are tweeting about and publicize your own information including your website or blog, interesting quotes you like, what you are doing, where you are having lunch etc, but most importantly as sales and marketing professionals information about what we are selling.

About 1 in 5 of your tweets should be product related. You want to keep your followers interested in you. You are what is interesting and your products are a by-product. A sad but true story, Amy Winehouse unfortunately just passed away and before traditional media got a hold of the story, Twitter had it going around the world in a few short hours of Ms Winehouse's passing. People are interested in people, not products.

This is viral media. One person tweets to their Twitter followers and within minutes, thousands of people learn the news as Twitter followers begin tweeting to their followers. Remember, people are interested in people and that is what social marketing is all about. So Tweet away my friends, Tweet away!
