The Amazing Spiritual Art of Yoga

By: Christopher Hall

Yoga is more than increasing an individual's flexibility and strength and mastering postures. According to Feuerstein, "The traditional purpose of Yoga, however, has always been to bring about a profound transformation in the person through the transcendence of the ego." The exact origin of Yoga is ambiguous, but it has originated in the East. The evidence of yoga first appeared on artifacts dated 3000 B.C. Evidence of yoga is also found in Rig Veda which suggests Yoga had Indian roots.

However, today Yoga is a far cry from what it used to be. Earlier (maybe 1000 years ago) it was practiced and patronized by monks and holy men living in the interiors of Indian. These days, there is hardly anybody eminent who does not practice Yoga. It is a unique hybrid of exercise and meditation that helps the individual to retain his sense of calm in the present, crazy world. When an individual practices Yoga, it is his way of connecting his soul to God. An individual does it to free his soul from the cycle of rebirth and attain Moksha. It is more accurately a process a person undergoes to control his physical and mental well being.

There are eight aspects of Yoga. This is also the reason Yoga is known as Astanga or eight-faceted Yoga. Those eight aspects of Yoga are: Yama, Asana, Pranayama, Dhyana, Dharana, Niyana, Dharana and Samadhi. The other aspects of Yoga are listed below:

1) Yama- It stands for Ahimsa or non-violence to living things. Ahimsa preaches respect, kindness and tolerance for all living beings.

2) Brahmacharya- The individual's mind should meet the Supreme One and integrate into one entity.

3) Aparigraha- Though there are numerous substances, people may find tempting, they need to control their desire for it, particularly food products.

4) Asteya- An individual needs to curb his desire to steal objects.

5) Satya- One should always speak the truth.

6) Niyama- It basically includes the concepts of Swadhyaya Cleanliness, Ishwari Pranidhana, Penance and Contentment.

7) Rutu Kala- An individual must refrain himself from initiating any form of intimacy with any woman apart from his wife.

Yoga has been identified as an alternative form of medicine to cure many ailments that mainstream medicine has failed. Yoga has cured diseases such as infertility, multiple sclerosis, lung disease and cancer. It is not yet known how Yoga can cure these diseases. A probable clue may lie in understanding the relationship between stress, disease and Yoga.
