Organic product sales have soared the past few years. Do you know the USDA definition of certified organic? Here's a quick rundown of what organic means and why I believe people should only drink organic coffee. 1) No synthetic fertilizers or pesticides may be used to raise certified organic crops.2) Certified organic products cannot contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs).3) To be labeled 100% organic the product may only contain organic ingredients (excluding water and salt).4) Products labeled “organic” must consist of at least 95 percent organically produced ingredients (excluding water and salt). Any remaining product ingredients must consist of nonagricultural substances approved on the National List including speci? c non-organically produced agricultural products that are not commercially available in organic form.5) If you see the USDA organic logo it means the product is either 100% Organic or 95% organic.6 Agricultural products labeled organic, such as organic coffee, can't be treated with sewage sludge (yes conventional crops are), or ionizing radiation. Agricultural products labeled “100 percent organic” and “organic” cannot be produced using excluded methods, sewage sludge, or ionizing radiation. Now that we have gone through the definition of certified organic we can move onto the topic at hand. Onto Organic Coffee. According to the definition of "organic", organic coffee must be at least 95% organically grown. Seeing as how coffee usually only contains "coffee", organic coffee blends are probably 100% organic, if they are only 95% the other 5% of ingredients must be listed on the product information panel.Do you want to know why you should care if your coffee was grown organically? 1) Regardless of what you think about conventional farming practices, can you imagine drinking something treated with sewage sludge?2) One of my greatest comforts with the USDA organic certification is no genetically modified plants. In the US, genetically modified crops don't have to be labeled as such, so the only way to know if your coffee is not genetically modified is to purchase organic coffee.3) For you decaf. drinkers organic coffee is your best friend. Conventional decaf. coffees are decaffeinated using carcinogenic organic solvents such as methylene chloride and ethyl acetate. Organic decaf coffee is processed using hot water, and NO chemicals. There is evidence to suggest that drinking chemical processed decaffeinated coffees may lead to rheumatoid arthritis.4) Not only are chemicals bad for us, but think about the poor coffee farmers. Coffee is grown in many poor countries and many farmers are not able to read pesiticide warning labels, resulting in improper mixing of chemicals and toxic exposure for them and the environment. The above are just a few reasons to only purchase organic coffee. I haven't even got into all the environmental damage that is cause by just manufacturing the pesticides and herbicides. In conclusion one must consider the utter love and attention that comes from growing coffee organically. The farmers inspect and coddle their crops, resulting in perfectly developed beans. Whatever your beliefs give organic coffee a try before you dismiss it completely.
