Tanzania Safari On The Rufiji River

By: Gen Wright

The largest river in Tanzania is the Rufiji River which is approximately more than 370 miles long. This great river was formed by the intercourse of the Kilombero River and the Luwegu River. Due to the vastness of the Rufiji River which flows out into the Indian Ocean, it shows great potential for hydroelectric power source and irrigation.

Since the Rufiji River stretches over a long distance across Tanzania, large varieties of flora and fauna are expected to be evident in its banks. In fact, the river's delta contains the largest mangrove forest in the world. A spectacular array of plants and animals can actually be divided into four distinct parts of the river accounting for the best Tanzania safari experiences of all.

The first distinct part of the river is where the Luwegu and Kilombero Rivers form to compose the Rufiji River, which is the Shuguli Falls. The majestic flow of two great rivers into a gigantic falls is indeed a beholding sight to see. Moreover, it has also become home to both resident and migratory birds. In fact, over 400 known species are recorded to have been spotted in this part of the river. Furthermore, a great collection of flora including various species of ferns are evident in the area surrounding the falls.

The second distinct part of the river is when the flowing waters of the Rufiji River is joined by the Ruaha River and enters the Stieglers Gorge. At this specific part of the river, the fusion of the Ruaha and Rufiji rivers are cramped up by the gorge resulting into a narrow 8-kilometer canyon flow. The taming of two great river flows into a narrow eight kilometer flow is just a bewildering sight to see.

Right after the gorge, the river heads down over the Pangani Rapids, Conman's Foil, and Rapeway Rapids. This is the third distinct part of the river. The sight of the great rush of the river waters after it has been compressed narrowly for about eight kilometers is overpowering. The current flows in these rapids are just so unpredictable that rafting along these rapids is truly a great experience. Moreover, hundreds of wildlife can be seen from the banks itself, making the experience not only exciting, but panoramic as well.

Finally, the Rufiji River flows out into a wide area where it splits into different lakes and channels, such as Lake Tagala, Lake Nzelekela, Lake Mzizimia, Lake Manze, and Lake Siwandu. These channels and lakes are considered as the actual photographic tourist game area of the Selous Reserve.

Thus if you want to experience one of the best Tanzania safaris of all times, you will just have to do it along the Rufiji River. Aside from the fact that this river provides four uniquely wonderful experiences, its great display of beautiful scenery and amazing wildlife is incomparable.
