By: Phil8 Rand8

Once you have decided that you want a hardwood floor, have chosen the type you want and have had the hardwood flooring installed, it doesn’t mean that the work is over. The care and maintenance of the floor, especially a hardwood floor is always necessary. Although it is important to maintain its cleanliness, it doesn’t mean that cleaning it is the only thing that you need to do.

Hardwood flooring is susceptible to scratches and dents, depending on its Janka hardness rating. A few scratches and dents may seem harmless at the onset, but they may lead to further destruction if not cared for. Furthermore, isn’t it awful to have some dents and scratches on those beautifully polished hardwood flooring? But getting dents and scratches isn’t the only thing you should worry about. It is also important to make sure that the floor is not exposed to moisture that is more than it can handle. Moisture can seep through the wood and force it to expand – therefore ruining its internal structure.

To prevent such things from happening to your wonderfully designed hardwood floor, there are a few things that you have to take note of. These are simple tasks that can thoroughly help protect and maintain your flooring.

First, make sure that no stones, or other materials similar to such, enter your home. Small stones have uneven edges and once they are stepped on, they will leave scratches on the floor. You can prevent this stones from being brought inside the house by putting area rugs or bristle mats on doors. This way, any person entering the home will not bring in unwanted objects.

Whenever you sweep the floor, make sure that no large piece of grit will get stuck in between the floor and the furniture. You should also use floor protectors on the base of each furniture and be sure that no grit is wedge in between the protector and the hardwood floor too.

Next thing you have to remember is to place rugs at all points of the home that has a high probability of the hardwood floor getting wet. Place one close to you near the sink, near the dishwasher, beneath the refrigerator and on the doorstep of the bathroom. If someone accidentally spills some water or any fluid, wipe it off as soon as you can. Hardwood floor expands when it is exposed to too much moisture, deteriorating its internal structure. This is the reason why you cannot use it in bathrooms.

Lastly, have you ever noticed that whenever you buy something heavy and the delivery guys bring it inside your home, dents and scratches would be all over the hardwood floor? That is why whenever they bring something in, you should request them to be extremely careful in settling the item inside your home. The same goes for you and your family whenever you are moving some furniture or appliance around. Moving heavy objects is not a simply task, hence you should be very careful and have protectors ready for such activities.

These are just some simple things that you need to do, but these will help make your hardwood floor maintain its beauty and last longer.
