Taking Care of Vinyl Car Graphics

By: joseph abelardo

Vinyl car graphics are a great way to personalize and customize the look of a vehicle. People who want to assert their individuality and personal taste through their cars often choose this kind of automobile decoration. With modern printing technology allowing for endless creative possibilities, an individual who wants his vehicle to stand out from the crowd can have any design he wants printed on vinyl sheets. These vinyl sheets have adhesive backs that can be easily applied to the metal, fiberglass, or glass surfaces of a vehicle. The car owner can also choose a type of vinyl sheets that will withstand the elements for years.

Taking care of vinyl car graphics is not hard-the car owner will just need to do maintenance regularly to keep the vinyl looking clean and new. Washing a car with vinyl car graphics is an easy task too. Using cold water (hot or lukewarm water may cause the adhesive in the back of the vinyl sheets to dissolve) is important when washing a car with car graphics applied on the surface. Mix a gallon of cold water with half a cup of car wash and stir this mixture with a soft clean cloth when washing the vehicle on your own. If you use a self-service car wash place, take the vehicle through an automatic wash that offers a soft touch option. Do not use the option that utilizes a high-pressure hose or a pressure washer-these will definitely cause damage to the car graphics you have on your vehicle.

When washing a car with vinyl elements, always use a low-pressure water hose-never use a power sprayer, as this can wash away and peel the sticker designs. Also, use mild car wash solutions and cold water all the time to avoid discoloration. Always dry the washed car with a soft rag or a chamois, and make sure that there are no spots of moisture accumulating in the areas with the car graphics. Moisture might dissolve the adhesive backings of the vinyl, which will lead to unsightly peeling.

When you have observed that the vinyl car graphics on your vehicle are already peeling, you can use a credit card or a plastic scraper to smooth them back on. If the peeling parts do not have adhesive content, cut them off with a pair of sharp scissors or carve them out with an X-Acto knife.
