Swimming Pools – No Seasons

By: Nicholas Ayres

You work so hard to get your pool ready for summer, you vacuum, you sanitize, test Ph levels. Then you drag out the pool furniture, now it is perfect. But, for how long? Depending on where in Australia you live, two maybe three months.

How about a season proof pool? The ideal temperature for a swimming pool is 28 degrees Celsius . The climate in Victoria will allow for an average pool temperature of 13 degrees. For a short period temperatures will reach 18-20 degrees, but there are ways to have the perfect pool temperature, always.

LP gas pool heaters are becoming more popular to Victoria due to the increased availability of natural gas. When deciding on a gas heating system a few areas that you need to consider are pool size, how long you plan to heat your pool and how quickly you wish to heat it. Gas heaters are controlled thermostatically. Thermostats range from simple mechanical thermostats to the more sophisticated digital type. Thermostats are required to have a safety high temperature setting. The standard safety setting is 42 degrees Celsius.

Heaters may be installed both indoors or outdoors. Indoor heater will have to be fitted with a special ventilation flue. NEVER install a heater intended for outdoors inside without proper ventilation. LP gas heaters are relatively inexpensive to operate and can be aided with the use of a pool blanket to retain heat.

Heat pumps are not often associated with pools. When thinking of heat pumps, air conditioning and refrigeration more likely comes to mind. Electric heat pumps us very little energy in relation to the amount of heat that is produced, e.g. 2kw of electricity will produce 10kw of heat. When deciding on the size of heat pump that will suit your heating need you must consider a few factor:

1. Your local climate
2. Your desired temperature
3. Amount of water to be heated
4. Location of your pool (sun or shade)
5. Indoor or Outdoor pool
6. Length of swimming “season”

Because heat pumps operate by drawing in surrounding air and they discharge cool air, adequate ventilation is required. Pump positioning is important in order to minimize noise disturbance. Installing a heat pump outdoors is preferable. Heat pumps require adequate water flow in order to operate properly, so you will need some sort of control device. Controls range from analog dial types to more sophisticated digital devices.

If you are looking to be more earth friendly when heating your pool, try solar heating. You can extend your swimming season up to six months using the sun’s energy. The solar heating system uses the pool’s existing water , that is cucirculated through EPDM rubber, PVC/TPR or UV stabilized polypropylene tubes. These tubes,(these are usually supplied in multitube panels) are mounted on your roof and heat from the sun is absorbed into the water that is then returned to the pool. The increased water temperature depends on the size of the collector area. Australian standard 3634 suggests a collector area of 60% of the pool surface area. For optimum heating the collector will need to be properly positioned, avoiding shade from trees or houses for at least 6 hours per day. The average solar system will require a water flow rate of 100-200 liters per minute. Although you can use your existing pump, the minimum flow rate for filtration must be maintained. It is advised to have a dedicated pump for your solar system. To avoid stopping up your collection system with dirt, use some type of strainer attached to the dedicated pump. A temperature sensing control will help on days that the sun is not shining. This control will operate the system only when heat can be gained.

When deciding on a heating system, it is always best to consult with a pool specialist.
