Summer parties – Celebrate the sun

By: Resa Fast

For most, summer is closing in, and in many parts of the world it is already here. For those of us who have been longing for it, it is a good idea to celebrate it in the only way fitting; a summer party.

A summer party can be how small or large as one sees fit, but a perfect summer party will not come by itself, you need to plan the evening to make it as fun as possible, for as many of your guests as possible. How much planning it takes isn’t easy to predict, it all depends on what type of party you are planning to have.

An easy way of throwing a summer party is a potluck in your own backyard. That way you can invite as many or as few guests as you please, the only limit to the number of guests is they will all need to actually fit in the garden. Besides the obvious upside of not needing to cook for everyone, hosting a potluck will give all the guests a great way of starting a conversation. Asking people about food they have made is always a good conversation starter, a few beers or cocktails and the guests will have a lovely time. The only thing you need to worry about is the weather; the guests may fit in the garden, but if it rains they will need someplace dry to sit. If the only other option is indoors, things can get very crowded very fast. It is far better to rent or buy a party tent or a few parasols and have in the garden, just in case of bad weather.

The most common summer party must be the barbeque, with friends and family drinking beer and eagerly awaiting the newly grilled burgers, sausages or steaks. If you plan on inviting a bunch of people over for a barbeque, you better be prepared; given the right amount of beer, some people can eat a whole bunch of hamburgers. You can combine the barbeque with the potluck and ask people to bring their own meat, even though the invitation may sound a bit funny. Of course one can ask the guests to bring their own drinks, but it is often better to decide what to drink on your party. It is not fun when some people down a keg of beer, while others sip on their first glass of wine.

For those who really want to go crazy, there are a lot of various themes perfect for summer parties. Imagine fifty people dressed up as pirates, calling each other matey while drinking rum and talking to fake parrots. How much more could one ask for? Or why not go kindergarten and have magicians, clown or circus artists as entertainment? This, I can promise you all, will be funnier and funnier as time (and liquor) goes by.

No matter what type of parties you prefer, you should try to host a summer party every year. It is a nice way of seeing friends and family and it may very well grow into a nice tradition in only a couple of years. Why not start this tradition right now?
