Some information about Gif format

By: Linnit Paulic

There are only 256 colors in the GIF image format. JPEG format gives the opportunity to have a deal with a bigger amount of colors. The indexed color map is applied to save the colors. It also sometimes has the name of a palette, color index or color lookup table. A one-byte number raging from 0 through 255 is saved in each pixel. It shows the situation in the palette.
From all mentioned above the conclusion follows that high-resolution images can be saved by means of the GIF format. And we should not forget that only 256 colors are able to be applied. You can install the palette of colors with the help of a graphics program. The image seems to have more than 256 colors after a GIF file has been already displayed. Pixels containing diverse colors are applied, that is why in the palette they are smoothed. The image will have only 256 colors after it has been transformed to GIF format. It means that the better graphics file conversion program is used, the better palette can be made.
It is advisable to apply the GIF file for that graphics where an acute gradation in colors between its parts is necessary. Two GIF formats can be traced. They are GIF87 and GIF89. GIF87 is the standard format and GIF89 serves for image transparency and animation. The last is able to convert any background into transparent and it means that various forms of images may be created.
Besides GIF files may be interlaced. So, they can be found in Internet browser after they have been downloaded. During the process of downloading interlaced GIFs are shown in their whole large, although bit by bit perfect in sharpness. A lot of graphics programs allow saving GIF images as interlaced.
But where does the name JPEG (JPG) come from? It came from the group of its creators. The difference between GIF and JPEG is that there is no limit in colors in JPEG format. There are the most popular JPEG formats. They are one byte per pixel (256 colors), two bytes per pixel (65,356 colors) and three bytes per pixel (16,777,216 colors).
Both GIF and JPEG files are saved compressed. But images may be saved with diverse amounts of perfection in a compression technology that has JPEG. Another difference is that JPEG images are less dithering than those in GIF format. So, the JPEG compression format has a lack of accuracy.
