Solar Lighting

By: Carol Jenkins

Solar Lighting Solutions have been the big thing in the garden centres and home improvement stores this summer. They seem to offer great options for exterior lighting, not only are they simple to put in, but they are also economical and available in a lot of styles.

Is this all good to be true though? Well I am into money saving (especially on fuel bills) in a big way, so I decided to put some to the test.

I decided on two versions. The elegant stalk style, and a more old fashioned lantern kind. Both are lovely looking designs and very popular choices.

Fitting was an stress-free affair for the stalk style as they simply push into soft soil. Set the on switch and they start charging on the free energy supplied by our sun.

Fitting the lantern wall light style lights needed a bit more effort, but only to drill the holes. They looked fantastic once up, so it is worth the small bit of extra effort in my opinion.

The instructions said that they would need a full day to charge ready for their initial use, so this is what they got. When they came on at night it was clear that they could not match the power of a proper wired light, but they did work well as an alternative low light solution.

If I were to do it again then I would get twice the amount of lights that I would if I were buying wired models. This way you can be ensured of more light and at the cost it is not a demanding investment when compared to the cost of having an electrician fit fully wired lights.

These styles of lights will just keep getting better as the technology moves forward. In the long run I can see all lighting going this way. Imagine the savings on the world energy cost in the future if this was the case.

If you are going to the trouble of fitting solar lighting then why not look at the other areas of your home where you could make savings on your energy bills? Easy things like fitting insulation can save you up to 20% on your heating bills. Savings like this soon add up so are well worth looking into.
