Solar Cell Directly Splits Water To Produce Recoverable Hydrogen

By: GARKO

Sorry that this is more technical than any of my other articles. I have a lollypop at the end if you are good and make it all the way through. Actually, you can skip over if you don’t want to get overwhumped. It’s only there as examples to illustrate a point only. What point? Will let you know later….
Penn State researchers have invented a device that can use Solar power to extract hydrogen from water.
At this stage, experiments have not yet created a perpetual solution. The method it uses also in most cases would cost more than using electricity to split water and recover hydrogen. One reason for the difficulty is that once produced, hydrogen and oxygen easily recombine (as opposed to the Beatles or me and my ex).
When visible light strikes a dye in the water, the chemical release of energy agitates electrons in the dye, and this, with the help of the catalyst, splits the water molecule.
The Penn State scientists impregnated a titanium dioxide electrode with the catalyst. They immersed the electrodes in a saline solution, but separated them from each other to avoid the problem of the hydrogen and oxygen recombining (gotta keep an eye on those two)!. Light need only shine on the titanium dioxide anode for the system to work. This type of cell is similar to those that produce electricity, but adding the catalyst allows the reaction to split the water into its component gases.
To split water 1.23 volts is needed, and the current experimental configuration is just shy of achieving that level so the researchers add about 0.3 volts from an outside source. Their current system achieves an efficiency of about 0.3 percent.
"Nature is only 1 to 3 percent efficient with photosynthesis," says one of the researchers. "Which explains why your lawn clippings do not produce enough energy to power your house or operate your car.
The researchers have a variety of choices to explore to optimizeimprove the process. They plan to investigate improving the dye, improving the catalyt in a number of ways and modifying the general geometry of the system.
"At every step of the system, we have choices," said another team member. "The main thing to solve is how to keep the electrons marching in the correct channel and not emit their energy and go down to ground state without contributing to the reaction."
Ok, here is the lollipop! What is most fascinating to me about all this is that we already have the problem solved with electrolysis in the Water4Gas system, so they are kind of reinventing the wheel. It might be fun but how does it help anybody? Better to assist us at Water4Gas to push forward what we already have that is working!
WATER4GAS is providing information for a nominal fee which people can use in their garage or wherever to build a small device which infuses hydrogen into the gas/air mixture that their automobile runs on.
What this does is make bite sized particles out of the ones that the system burns as fuel. Therefore it is able to use a lot more of it.
By doing this you can minimumly expect to lower your gasoline consumption by 30-50% or significantly more. Those molecules must have been pretty "blankin'" huge in some systems before. But with WATER4GAS they are made consumable so you can lower your gasoline consumption.
It also helps to lower emissions significantly.
This information has been purchased by over 9000 individuals already and the percentage of happy customers is about 99%! So how about you?
