Slimming down those mobile phone bills

By: David Maine

Have you ever opened up your monthly mobile phone bill only to have your jaw drop to the floor a second later? You thought that your monthly payment was only £15, so why is this month’s bill so much more than that?

Many consumers have experienced this unfortunate monthly shock, but for many of these mobile phone customers it’s their own fault. It’s sad but true that most phone users are complacent when it comes to their phone costs and are wilfully ignorant of the terms of their mobile phone agreement and their inclusive text message and call allowance.

Below we take a look at some easy ways for you to cut some of these hefty mobile costs.

1 – look at your current mobile package. Make sure you know your precise text message and free call allowance. If you often find yourself running over your monthly allowance you should ask your provider to transfer you to another tariff that better suits your needs. You may find that the line rental is higher per month, but you’ll receive an increased number of free calls and text message to use every thirty days and so are far less likely to exceed your monthly limit.

2 - look out for free text and call deals. Various advertisers have teamed up online to offer free texts and minutes to 16 – 24 year olds. For this privilege, they must agree to receive up to 6 multimedia messages each day from companies. So if you’re willing to sell your soul (a little) you could save yourself some cash.

3 – don’t upgrade! Your provider could be tempting you with the latest flashy mobile phone handset come the start of your new contract, but be careful as the price of this new gadget will be priced into your new contract. As the saying goes, there’s no such thing as a free lunch, and unsurprisingly, there’s no such thing as a free iPhone. A better option may be buying the handset yourself and going for a cheaper SIM-only contract. This way you’ll still get free texts and minutes, but you’ll never be tied to a contract for more than thirty days, making it easy to switch if it isn’t right for you.

4 - put your old phone to good use. Did you know that you can trade in your old phone towards the cost of a new one? Many mobile phone shops offer this service and it can get you more than £20 off the price of your new phone.

5 - SIM-share. Most major network providers such as o2, Vodafone and Virgin Mobile have started to offer several SIM cards together in one cheap bundle – by sharing these out amongst your relatives and friends you’ll have unlimited free calls and texts to each other.
