The Intermountain west consists of the states Mo.,Id.,Wy.,Co.,Nv.,Ut. Although these places are known for for their striking beauty there are a large number of aspects of this area that a lot of people do not often tour but are definitely worthy of a visit. If you have the desire and inclination then make a point of visiting at least one or more of these attractions on your next trip. 1. Visit the Hot Pools- This geographic area has a great deal of thermal activity which has resulted in a a good number of mineral hot springs in these states. Springs are as developed or as primitive as one likes. For those that are like simplicity then White Sulfur Springs Hotel is the perfect place for you. Those that like more of a spa feel, check out some of the thermal springs that Colorado has to offer. 2. Hunt for Pictographs- The archaic Indians of the Intermountain west were extremely artistic, and a a lot of there 4000 year old art can still be seen today, chipped into rock surfaces and overhanging cliffs across the region. For a quick tour, Fremont State Park in Utah has a rewarding trail and interpretive center, for those that like hiking Grand Gulch in Utah is a great place to explore. 3. Tour the Lesser Known National Recreation Areas- If you have not visited Yellowstone Park, then certainly you should see there first, but for those of you that have already done the most popular parks in the region you could think about stopping by the smaller ones. All together, this region has over 50 National sites, and most of the state have outstandingstate park systems as well. 4. See the Regional Museums (as well as the most popular ones)- A lot of the best museums are those that are off the beaten path, like the small museum in Three Forks, Montana in which the local people gathered memorabilia from their area spanning a 100 years. Of course, some of the more famous museums are worth visiting as well, such as the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wy. This museum covers many different themes of the west such as Old Guns of the West or Modern Western Art. 5. Go Skiing- The West is famous for its sunny weather, but we also have the best powder around. For those of you that are not interested in trying snowboarding, you should consider cross-country. Sun Valley, Idaho has wonderful trails as well as the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest in Montana. 6. Explore a Mountain Lake during the beautiful summer weather– The mountains of the intermountain west are full of beautiful alpine lakes. Many of these are popular but a number of the most exquiste are off the primary route of most travelers and frequently require a long trek to reach. One of our top choices is Fremont Lake in the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming. This alpine lake is enclosed by serated ridges and picturesque mountains that were sculpted by glacier ice. The Wind River mountains are reknow for camping and fishing opportunities. Another great destination in the Wind Rivers is Lonsome lake located near the Cirque of the Towers in the southern section of the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming. As you can tell, there are a number of things that you can do in the mountain west, instead of the oldgroup tour. Any of the above suggestions will not only take you to the heart of the true West but provide you with many great pictures for a long time to come.
