Simplifying Your Workday

By: Aubrey Moulton

Your job may be tremendously difficult, but if you simplify, it can be so much better. So try and eliminate the routine, and focus on what’s really important. It is easy to {get weighed down by everything that needs to get done but by focusing and eliminating time wasters can be much more productive.

Begin nice and easy and don’t try to change all your habits at once because this can become too discouraging. Take action in small increments over time. A rather easy change to make is to arrive at your workplace early. Once you accustom yourself to going in early, you won't miss the sleep as much because you will accomplish so much more in a day. In the morning it’s quiet so it’s possible to get more accomplished. There are not group meetings, people chatting, or ringing telephones so there aren’t as many items taking up your time and pulling your attention away from the task at hand.

Even though people work long hours, they may not be as productive as they could be. So, by restricting the hours you work, you have the potential to focus and get a lot more done because you waste less time. So the 10 hour work day might easily shrink to a seven hour work day if you’re willing to concentrate and work much more efficiently.

One more excellent method to increase output and persuade yourself is by reexamining your priorities. By creating a clear-cut list, you’ll be certain to get the most necessary items finished right away and then if the less important jobs aren’t accomplished it does not really matter because there is always tomorrow to finish minor tasks.
A major key is understanding what distracts you and wastes a lot of your time at work. By recognizing this, individuals can rid themselves of a great deal of distractions. If you are diverted by Twitter or other social networks or even emails, these can be put off until later in the day. That way their priorities are finished and they have something to look forward to later on. Then again if you begin your work day with these distractions, it is likely to be a long day for you with little productivity.

Another way to reduce unnecessary complexity in your work day includes writing shorter emails, and automating or cutting back meetings. While this may seem like a massive undertaking, realize that a great deal of time can be saved. Emails can get verbose so by composing briefer emails quite a bit of time will be saved by both the composer as well as the recipient. Also, by automating a lot of tedious work, man hours will be saved for those things that need to be done by hand. Another important thing to realize is that ninety percent of meetings are a waste of time; so only have them when it’s absolutely necessary and stick to your meeting outline to save time.

Lastly, remember to take breaks. It’s an accepted fact that our brains and bodies need time to rest so get up out of your chair and walk around. Go take a breather outside or chat with someone for a few minutes, or even massage your neck. Then get back to work and avoid all the distractions that are commonplace in the office.
