Simple Steps to Lower the Cost of Your Pool Maintenance

By: Paige Price

Properly maintaining your pool will make your swimming experience as clean, fun and as healthy as it should be. Properly maintaining your pool will also help you to avoid many problems down the road. Here are some simple steps that you should follow:

Keep your Water Clean!

Effective pool maintenance begins with clean water. Clean your filters often and replace them as needed. If your filters are clogged, you will get poor water circulation. This can lead to failure of other parts of the pool system, such as the pump motor, along with throwing off the water’s alkalinity and salinity levels.

Test your Pool’s pH Level Regularly!

You should check your pool’s pH level twice a week in the summer and once a week in the winter. By keeping track of your pool pH level, you can make minor chemical adjustments to your water as needed and avoid major problems. Also, you should never chemically treat your water without testing the pH level first as you might apply the wrong treatment to your water. You cannot judge the chemical composition of your water simply by looking at it!

Keep that Water Pumping!

A common mistake is to not run pumps long enough. Your pump should run 1 hour for every 10 degrees of temperature. Failure to run your pump often enough could result in a fast-clogging and possibly ruined filter. Make sure that the speed on your pump is high enough as well: your ozonator needs a certain speed to be able to perform correctly
Add Chemicals Properly
Before beginning a treatment, make sure that your pool water is at the proper level. Adding a treatment to a pool at low water level increases the concentration of the chemicals and can have negative effects. Never add chemicals to your pool during the day. Sunlight breaks down many pool chemicals, causing the water to become cloudy or emit a noxious smell. You should always add chemicals to the pool in the evening, so that they can do their work overnight. Also, never let the pH level get above 8.0. At this level, chlorine is only 10% active. The ideal level is 7.0, where chlorine is about 70% active, although 7.5 is okay as well since chlorine is still 50% to 60% active at this level. By properly maintaining the pH level, one can receive the full potential of the water that is already in the pool. One should also keep the alkalinity between 80-140 PPM. Improper alkaline levels affect the balance of other chemicals in the pool. You should also check for calcium hardness every month and TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) every six months since these can also affect water balance.
Check for Leaks!
One cannot swim in a pool that has water leaking out of it. Check your ozone generator for loose fittings and connectors regularly so that you can make the necessary repairs. Also, check to make sure that the bottom of the pool hasn’t cracked so that water does not migrate from the inside of the pool out onto the decking. If you see a crack, fill it with silicon.
