Should you buy Anti-Tarnish Jewellery Boxes or are they just a hype?

By: C JB

The subject of anti-tarnish jewellery boxes have become increasingly popular in the last few years. In fact many jewellery box manufacturers now offer anti-tarnish jewellery boxes in their range. But are anti-tarnish jewellery boxes really all they claim to be? We completely disagree.
As much as we will all like to wave a magic wand and make tarnish vanish, it is sadly not possible. Tarnish forming gases are in the atmosphere and tarnish is formed on the surface of silver products if left unused for lengthy periods. While we agree that tarnish is undesirable, we do not agree that you need to take extreme measures to protect your jewellery from it. In fact protecting your silver jewellery from tarnish can be achieved in relatively simple ways.
While anti-tarnish jewellery boxes in recent years have been claiming success with elimination of tarnish, there has been no solid proof of their claims. You will find mixed reviews on the internet if you take the time to search. If you are considering an anti-tarnish jewellery box, it is worth knowing about the problems many have found with their anti-tarnish jewellery boxes.
The following are 3 of the main problems we have found;
1. The lining material of anti-tarnish jewellery boxes are basically coated with the anti-tarnish chemicals which wears out over time, so the claims that this effect lasts for a lifetime is principally flawed.
2. The lining of these jewellery boxes are usually very dark colours which we find unappealing and a major compromise to make. The choice of dark colour lining for anti-tarnish jewellery boxes is sadly a necessity as these linings will become discoloured and stained with the chemicals over time. So the dark coloured lining hides the inevitable stains. Some manufacturers have been able to get away with lighter coloured anti-tarnish but that is only because the lining contain far less anti-tarnish chemical than their darker alternative meaning you only get a fraction of the protection.
3. A third problem is that your jewellery is in constant contact with these chemicals which you do not remove before wearing the jewellery against your skin. These chemicals can cause allergic reactions to sensitive skin as has been found in some cases.
To be quite frank, anti-tarnish is no more than an industry hype and you should not get caught in it. Protecting your jewellery boxes from tarnish can be achieved relatively easily by using products readily available in most homes such as chalk or silica gel (found in the packaging of new products) or inexpensive and readily available anti-tarnish products. All these products work in exactly the same way – they absorb the harmful gases in your jewellery box that cause tarnish.
Anti-tarnish strips are our favourite product. They are readily available and cheap to use. Each strip is impregnated with anti-tarnish chemicals that absorb the tarnish forming gases in your jewellery box. Just place one strip in each drawer and the effect can last up to 12 months.
New and technological advancements in production methods of these strips now prove that they are ecologically friendly chemicals that will not harm your jewellery or the environment – look at it as your way of doing your bit for this wonderful planet!
