Seve Ballesteros Cancels St Andrews Appearance

By: Gen Wright

Physicians have directed golfing legend Seve Ballesteros not fly to Fife in Scotland to attend the 150th St Andrews's event, so he can get some necessary time off .

In late 2008 Seve Ballesteros was diagnosed with a brain tumour in Madrid. He required four surgical procedures to stop the spread of the tumour, he then went on to have chemotherapy. Ballesteros retired from competitive golf back in 2007, even though he could often be seen on the links golf course up to late 2008. He wanted to revisit the 'birthplace of golf' St Andrew's due to the fact that St Andrew's was a the sites where he won a major back in 1984, it is also a place near and dear to his heart.

Seve Ballesteros had been asked to play the day before the Open four-hole Champions Challenge with 32 former champions. Upon referring to the issue on his personal website, he stated that he would need to follow the doctor's orders to not take the trip , and had decided to tell people now because he knew that people may have been planning to travel to the Open to see him; and so , he felt it necessary to not let them down . He stated that he was upset that he would not be able to see his fans, who he thanked for their immense support during his entire career, and during his most difficult time of all his illness. Ballesteros revealed this information after a normal 3 month check up at the same Madrid hospital that he was committed in late 2008. A spokesperson said, "The medical team have informed him this morning that at this time he should not put himself under any undue stress or in potentially emotional situations."
Golf fans need not be worried over this news, as they are assured that Ballesteros is healthy for a man that has been through four operations. Nonetheless , the reason he should not travel to Scotland is a precautionary measure . Dr Cristóbal Belda said, "Despite the excellent general state that Mr. Ballesteros enjoys, we do not think the trip to Scotland this coming July would be appropriate." He followed the statement by saying that he felt some of the emotional trials that Ballesteros may come up against could pose a threat to his speedy healing .

St Andrews is one of the most world prestigious golf competitions , is held every year in Fife, Scotland. At present there are a multitude of qualifiers making their way to the competition itself, with the most famed golfers already set to attend , including Tiger Woods. 2005 US open tournament winner Michael Campbell is at this time playing LFQ's (local qualifying tournaments) to try and qualify for the open because his rank is outside the requirement. Annually there are quite a few competitions previous to St Andrews which takes place July 18th . These tournaments are there for newer players to try to qualify for the main event.
