Since Africa is blessed with a wide variety of flora and fauna, it is one of the most visited places in the whole world. Africa is famous for its national parks. In fact, most of the land area of this continent is dedicated to parks and reserves. From among the different parts of Africa, Tanzania is one of the largest reserves in the country. Tanzania is one of the oldest known continuously occupied places on earth. This is evident in fossil remains of humans and animals that date back two million years ago. Moreover, Tanzania covers a large land area which accounts to approximately 945,000 square kilometers, making this Northeastern African country the world's 31st largest country. The large land area of Tanzania is one of the reasons why many national parks and reserves are situated in this part of Africa. Some of the most famous national parks include Kilimanjaro, Mahale, Udzungwa, and Serengeti to name a few. While these national parks feature Africa's Big Five, each of these parks has unique wildlife collection on its own. The Serengeti National Park is one of the largest parks in Tanzania. It covers 14,763 square kilometers of savannah, grassland plain, woodlands, and riverine forests. Moreover, it is most famous for its annual migration of more than 1.5 million white bearded wildebeest, and around 200,000 zebras. Aside from these, the park is also famous for holding one of the largest populations of the Big Five such as the lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros, and buffaloes. In fact, the largest population of lions in Africa is coming from the Serengeti National Park. In order to preserve the natural habitat of the wildlife, human habitation is not permitted at Serengeti National Park except for a few members of the TANAPA staff, Frankfurt Zoological Society staff, and lodges and hotels staff. These lodges and hotels are located in the main settlement area and are constructed to accommodate tourists and visitors. The Serengeti National Park is divided into three regions which are the Serengeti plains, the Western corridor, and the Northern Serengeti. The Serengeti plains consist of endless grassland which is most suitable for grazing and breeding. This part of the park is where the wildebeest breed, and is where most hoofed animals stay during the wet season. On the other hand, the Western corridor is composed of black clay and covers the swampy savannah of the park. This area is home to the Nile crocodiles, the martial eagle, and the colobus monkey. Finally, the Northern Serengeti is predominantly woodlands and hills. This is practically the best place to find zebras, elephants, giraffes, and dik diks because of its bushy environment and the presence of the Mara River.
