If you like spending someone else's money then this might be the perfect career for you. Senior and junior buyer jobs can be found in many industries. Almost every industry needs buyers to fulfill duties and assignments. When you go to your local store someone had to approve it to sit on the shelf for you the consumer. When something isn't in stock that responsibility to replenish belongs to a buyer. They are the gatekeepers of inventory.

What exactly does a buyer do exactly? A buyer has many functions. They are maintaining inventory, negotiating prices from vendors, expediting stock when necessary from vendors and to customers, dealing with upper management, and maybe even the sales staff. Depending on the industry a buyer may need to have knowledge on special rules and regulations.

What qualifications does a buyer need? A buyer should have good speaking , writing , and analytical skills, knowledge of major computer software programs like Microsoft word, excel , and powerpoint. A more senior level buyer should also have some managerial and business experience as well. A buyer position is most likely going to require a four year college degree. Unless you start out as an assistant buyer or office clerk and move your way up within the company. There are buyer or purchasing certifications that you can get which will provide more credibility to you and even allow you to command a higher salary.

Be prepared to travel if necessary. Some positions might require you to meet with your vendors for good business relations. If this is a large company you may have to travel to other offices for your company and attend conferences related to your industry. Hours and times vary according to individual jobs, but most operate on standard office hours. For the private sector you might be required to stay to meet deadlines and sales goals.

Does this seem like something that might appeal to you? If you have a four year degree and some business experience you may be able to get a job as a buyer. Similar jobs are in inventory management or inventory control. The items that you purchase as well as how well the profit margin built into the items will determine how well you do as a buyer. You may be assigned a specific group of vendors or product lines to handle on your own to manage.

The salary for this field is very good. If you have no experience and simply have a college degree you might start out in the $30,000 to $40,000 range. With more experience and some of the upper buyer levels you could earn upwards to six figures or more. And this point you might even decide to become a purchasing consultant showing others how they can save money with their business by streamlining their inventory and incorporating a just in time program which will save them money by having the least amount of funds tied up in capital.
