We do not behave in accordance with the reality of what we can do, but in accordance with reality of what we believe we can do. Our mind forms pictures; we emotionalize these pictures with our feelings. We then label these emotionalized pictures with words. This is called self talk. Self-talk is a process by which words trigger pictures that bring about emotions. Every emotional thought leaves a record in our mind. We do not record what is happening. Rather, we record what we think is happening. One thought alone does not form our self-image. It takes an accumulation of experiences or thoughts to build our self-image. The key to freedom is to control what we think about. Our perception of reality as we see it. Other people can hand us opinions about ourselves. They can tell us how wonderful we are or they can put us down. That information does not become part of our belief system until we accept it as our own thoughts. If we see ourselves in a certain way we will act in accordance with that belief, whether it’s true or not. We sometimes hold on to opinions, attitudes and beliefs that no longer serve us. This is why we must examine our beliefs on a regular basic. Self talk is the constant conversation we carry on with ourselves. Our self image is an accumulation of our perceived thoughts, attitudes and opinions that have been stored since childhood. Every statement you make has an effect on your subconscious mind. Every time you replay a negative childhood experience of being called “stupid” as far as the subconscious mind goes it does not know the difference if that experience happened today or 20 years ago. We have to learn to stop attacking our self image at those times when our performance does not live up to our own expectations because our negative self talk will only increase poor performance. So how do you stop this? The first thing to do is to recognize we’re engaging in negative self talk and STOP IT. Then follow-up with a positive statement. Shut off the old picture. Then make an affirmation of how your going to do it next time. "I shouldn't have eaten that chocolate cake! I'm so stupid. I’m too fat. I'm just a hopeless case. My family stresses me out and undermines my self-control. I'll never get down to a size 10. I should just give up! " Lets turn this around with positive self-talk: "I wish I hadn't eaten that chocolate cake! It wasn't a good choice, and I'm smart enough to make better choices. Looking back, I realize I wasn't hungry. I was stressed, and I was only wanting to calm down. So how can I calm down in a healthy, positive way? I'm determined to get to size 10, and mistakes are just part of the learning process." The key is reinforcing an existing characteristic about yourself you already believe to be true. Affirmations will only work if you believe they are true! The following affirmations are some of those I use which may be helpful for you. You can also develop other affirmations that are more specific to your needs. The power they have to alter your life will make itself felt if you repeat them DAILY and when you are thinking negatively. Try to focus on one affirmation and consider what it means to you in your life. Tell yourself: I deserve to be happy and successful I have the power to change myself I can forgive and understand others and their motives I can make my own choices and decisions I am free to choose to live as I wish and to give priority to my desires I can choose happiness whenever I wish no matter what my circumstances I am flexible and open to change in every aspect of my life I act with confidence having a general plan and accept plans are open to alteration It is enough to have done my best I deserve to be loved What everyone wants in life is to feel good. Start by knowing where you want to go and begin to talk to yourself about it.
