The Samsung Gleam-U700, also known as the Samsung Muse, is a clamshell style phone that is designed for the average user who wants something with a little more substance in his or her pocket. Unlike so many phones that are designed for the masses which feature bland, boring exteriors, the Samsung Gleam-U700 tries to break out of the box by offering a design that is on par with the more expensive fashion phones that dominate the higher end markets. It is unfortunate, then, that the Samsung Gleam-U700 misses the mark in terms of build quality. The Samsung Gleam-U700 is a dual band CDMA device, so it can only be used in the United States and a few other places in the world. However, because the Samsung Gleam-U700 is a CDMA device, it is capable of supporting the 3G networks for high speed data transfer, meaning that you can send and receive files at higher rates thanks to the EVDO rev.0 network. Measuring in at approximately four inches by two inches by a half of an inch, the Samsung Gleam-U700 is pretty big for a clamshell device. However, it weighs only 95 grams, so you don’t have to worry about carrying it around all day. Battery life is decent on the Samsung Gleam-U700. Expect to get approximately three and a half hours of talk time or 250 hours of standby time on a single charge. However, there have been numerous reports of Samsung Gleam-U700 batteries overheating and frying all of the phone’s internal electronics. There are two displays built in to the Samsung Gleam-U700. The main display, located on the inside of the device, allows for 240 by 320 pixels of resolution and a color depth of 262k colors. The secondary display, located on the outside of the device, allows for 96 by 96 pixels of resolution and a color depth of 65k colors. These displays put the Samsung Gleam-U700 on par with other phones in this end of the market. The Samsung Gleam-U700 also features a built in 2.0 megapixel digital camera with video capabilities and digital zoom. Multimedia is supported on the Samsung Gleam-U700 thanks to the built in video and audio player – though not every popular format is supported. Memory can also be expanded thanks to the microSD card slot. Other features include: * Bluetooth 1.2 support * 500-names capacity phone book * Alarm * Calendar * Notepad * World clock * To-do list * Calculator * Currency converter * Number of voice commands * Voice recorder * Speakerphone * Email support * GPS support Pros * Attractive design * Good feature list * 3G / GPS support Cons * Build quality just isn’t there Overall The Samsung Gleam-U700 is an attractive phone with a lot of impressive, modern features. Sounds like a recipe for a phone that will simply fly off the shelves. Unfortunately, there are some major build problems with the device. From the overheating battery to microphones and speakers that simply quit functioning after a few weeks of use, the Samsung Gleam-U700 just doesn’t live up to the usually high Samsung standards.
