SMS for grown ups

By: David Maine

Text messaging is really a form of email, designed to be compatible with even the smallest mobile phones. It is based on a protocol called SMS (Short Message Service) that’s almost as old as the silicon chip itself, that’s designed to relay short messages between remote mainframe terminals. A single text message usually has a set length of around 160 characters, which works out around a couple of average length sentences.

A text can be written and read quickly, and there is no real need for formal formatting, which makes it far and away the most convenient method of communicating for when you’re on the move. They don’t cut out if you go through a tunnel, and you don’t have to shout if reception is poor. It’s also a little more considerate to your fellow passengers you text rather than make private phone calls on public transport. If you’re travelling, you can save yourself a whole lot of time by utilising the text function on your phone. For example, you can track a package, check the status of your flight, or book a taxi, in the time it takes you to get through just one voice call!

If you can’t be bothered typing messages yourself – those phones are awful small nowadays, after all! – some networks offer a service that enables you to write and retrieve messages using your voice. However, by far the best aspect of text messages is the price! Most networks offer some surprisingly affordable monthly price plans which include unlimited free text messages as part of the deal.

When text messaging became available in 1993, with the advent of second generation mobile phone networks, they were slow to catch on. For a generation raised on voice telephony, text messaging seemed like a throwback to the days of the telegraph pole! Nonetheless, the fact that it was by some distance the most inexpensive form of mobile telecommunication ensured that it became increasingly popular with the younger generation, and in some markets has now overtaken phone calls as the most popular form of mobile telecommunication.
