SHELLS AND PEARLS USED TO MAKE FASHION JEWELLERY Since the very beginning of time man has adorned his self with things from nature that he has found around him and nothing more so that with shells. These have been available in abundance on the sea shore and by the banks of rivers. Then shell jewellery used to be quite crude where now these beautiful shells are cleaned and polished and are even used with precious metals like gold and silver. If you are looking for a fun piece of fashion jewellery there are many necklaces available is simple designs where beautiful shells are hanging on leather thongs and from silver and gold chains. More complicated designs where the shells have been polished, lacquered and cut have been set into silver and gold. Shells come in many sizes and shapes and some are cut or dyed to suit the needs of the jewellery designer. They come in many different colours like the browns and beiges of the cowrie shells look amazing with semi-precious stones like Tigers Eye and Brown Goldstone. Or teamed together with the soft beiges of pearls and Mother of Pearl. The stunning colours of Paua shell are brought to life with stones like Amethyst, Blue Goldstone, Green Aventurine and Turquoise. These semi-precious stones set of the natural blues, greens, purples and pinks in the amazing shell. The Paua shell or Abalone shell as it is sometimes called is found in countries like New Zeeland and if you visit there you will see pieces of Paua shell jewellery that has been handmade into beautiful designs. Earrings, bracelets and necklaces are all produced from this beautiful Paua shell. This shell is used in large pieces or made into beads or cabochons and set in to pendants and rings. Mother of Pearl is another shell that is greatly used in the production of handmade jewellery. The soft colours of this shell lend its self to semi-precious stones like Rose Quartz, Quartz, Fluorite and pearls. Shell jewellery designs where they have combined crystals in the design bring shell jewellery to life adding sparkle and interest. My personal preference is for fashion jewellery made from a combination of shells and bright beads especially for the summer. These beautiful pieces of fashion jewellery that is handmade from these natural materials always work well with summer clothes and a suntan. I nearly always find a new piece while away on holiday and have acquired quite a collection of designs from all around the world. I also have some large statement pieces that brighten up the dullest of winter days when worn over a jumper. I am sure that whatever your fashion choice is there is a piece of shell jewellery that will suit your outfit. My advice is to just have fun looking for beautiful pieces of handmade shell jewellery in unique and unusual designs and I am sure that you will love wearing it for years and years to come.
