By: Steve Miller

Reputation management is a complex process which depends on the company’s actions and the reaction of the external environment in general. It deals with an aspect of trust and ways to maintain the trustworthiness of a company. Reputation management is now regarded as an indispensable process and has branched into a whole new industry.

Reputation management has become recognized as an important part of overall corporate image or a brand. Companies have begun realizing that years of hard work on building a brand can be sabotaged by their competitors, human mistakes and so on. The advent of computers has made the collection analysis of data easier. It has become possible to track the opinions about a product or service or even the competitor. Such an analysis provides valuable information to the company which helps in formation of strategies which minimizes the business risks.

The advent of social media has made this management even more crucial. Social media sites resemble a small village where everybody are closely knitted with each other, the interactions are frequent, what is felt by others is instantly transmitted to others.

Users now have the freedom to express themselves freely and receive instant feedback from other customers. It is no longer the world where the only mechanism of feedback was filling feedback forms without knowing how the other customers felt. Such is the force of social media that a product could be made or break within hours of its being launched. This networking power has made companies realize that bombarding commercials on television won’t bring instant profits. Smart companies have begun getting their act to-gather by actively beginning to respond to customers.

Reputation management has taken the concept of services to the next level. Companies are quick to apologize for traditional complaints through social media sites like Facebook, Twitter etc. The fact that user’s reactions are instantly broadcasted to the world through social media sites like Twitter have kept companies on their toes and made them more responsible.

Reputation management consultants ensure that companies do not lose to capitalize on feedback; they are experts in turning the negative feedback into a positive one through quick actions which makes the company appear as truly concerned for its customers. eBay is one such example where reputation management is constantly in action. The sellers on eBay are rated by their buyers in terms of feedback. A negative feedback impacts the reputation of the seller and can spell an end to his selling career at eBay. This mechanism ensures that buyers feel comfortable while dealing on eBay which creates a whole new experience for the buyers. Such management systems ensure that buyers and sellers remain honest and fraudulent activities can be curtailed.

Reputation management has a long way to go as a full fledged industry; it will become a necessity for every company who cares about its reputation. It helps to put systems in place which ensures at minimizing the losses due to some disgruntled customer or a jealous competitor.
