Reduce Electricity Bills - eight methods to save money

By: Sandra Wise

How often have you received your electrical bill only to toss it on the counter unopened, dreading the number in the amount due section? As energy prices continue to skyrocket, people all across the nation are feeling the heat in their pocketbooks and are on the lookout for ways to reduce electricity bills. Plus, with the economy the way it is today, it appears to get harder every month to make ends meet so each buck you can save on power bills is an additional greenback in your checking account that will be used towards something else.

Fortunately , there are a range of ways you can dramatically shrivel your electricity bill that will not really change how you live your day to day life. By implementing 2 or three, or all, of the following eight great tips about how to reduce electricity bills, not only will you be saving money, but you'll save energy, too!

one. Set your water heater to 140 degrees or less. This could not only save energy, but water as well because if your water heater temperature is too high, the system will add cold water as a safety measure to stop burns. Keep in mind that if you have small kids or a baby at home, the advice is to set the thermostat to not more than 120 degrees to stop scalds on their delicate skin -- this will basically save you even more money on your power bill.

2. Speaking of thermostats : install and electrical thermostat and set it one - 5 degrees lower than you routinely would. For every degree lower, you will save five percent of your energy usage.

three. Did you know that Approx twenty percent of your home's heat will leak out from your windows and doors? By trying weather stripping to seal the doors and windows in your home, as well as a clear caulk to seal cracks in floorboards and window panes, you will be in your way to reducing electricity bill noticeably. Just think, by regaining that twenty percent of lost heat, you might probably lower your thermostat even more than the 1-5 degrees in tip two in order to save even more cash and energy!

4. This is a big one : when something isn't in use, turn it off -- not just at the ready, either. This is for items such as computers, DVD payers and VCRs if you have them, printers, cell telephone chargers and other such electronic gear that sucks up energy like crazy. When these things are not in use, they still consume a huge 35% of your home's energy just by being left on. 35%! For your ease, you could use power strips to plug these items in to and when they aren't in use, just flip the switch on the power strip and you will be able to turn off multiple pieces of apparatus all at the same time.

5. Insulate your walls, roof and attic. By insulating your home, you are literally making a barrier that helps prevent heavy energy loss.

6. Buy and replace your incandescent light-bulbs with energy efficient compact fluorescent Edison style bulbs. CFL bulbs essentially cut back your energy consumption through light-bulbs up to 75% and since they last approximately 5 years, you can expect the lifetime savings of these bulbs to be between $400 and $1500. Too, you should remember that the executive has passed legislation which will phase out the standard bulb by 2012 in order to help to reduce Carbon emissions and save energy. By beginning immediately, you will save energy and money even earlier.

7. When washing your clothes, make sure you only wash complete loads. Additionally, pt your washer settings on the coolest water possible for your material, only permit the amount of water mandatory for your items and set the cycle to the shortest possible one that will get everything clean. This will save you quite a little bit of energy too.

eight. Make sure you get your appliances checked and serviced each year. Items like a furnace or hot water heater can develop loose gaskets and leaks that will need to be fixed. By having a qualified serviceman out to check, not only could you stop the price of a surprising breakdown, but you can guarantee your appliances are running efficiently and smoothly.

As you can see, many of those ways to reduce electricity bill actually won't cost you anything, yet the rewards are indeed measurable. So, what are you waiting for? Get in there start saving on your power and energy cost today!
