Recall Training

By: simplesimon

Teaching a dog to be obedient and come back to you when he or she is off the lead, is very important when it comes to safety, obedience and well being for all involved. It is so vital that a dog should learn this command when it is a puppy and still impressionable, although with a little more time an older dog CAN learn new tricks! When this training has been completed successfully, the dog owner will be confident that the dog will return to the owner or dog walker on vocal command.

The training should be fun and rewarding for the dog as this will stimulate the puppy and also make it realise that it will be rewarded for following commands and instruction. They realise this quite quickly.

In the first instance you must identify a treat which the dog absolutely loves; this will then get its attention.

Take a ball, such as a tennis ball, and go out to play with your dog.

Develop the skill of playing and interacting with your dog by rolling the ball to the dog and then away from it so that you can play fetch with it.
When your dog interacts with you or brings the ball back praise the dog and give its favourite treat.

After a short time and once this has been developed you (and your dog) are ready to start recall training.

Ask a member of the family or friend who likes your dog to help you regularly with 10 minutes training.

Take your dog to a secure and closed area where you can let him or her off the lead in the knowledge it can’t run away or interfere with other people.

An old tennis court which still has a net would make an ideal venue. Remember to take bags with you should you need to clean up after the dog.

You and the other person should stand either side of the net.

Show the dog the ball and throw or roll it into the net. When it chases the ball ask it to come to you with the ball.

Praise the dog if it follows your command!
Give the dog more than the normal amount of treats i.e. 3-5 for doing what you asked.

As the skill develops throw the ball to your partner and tell the dog to fetch.
If necessary show the dog how to get around the net.

Once the dog understands the game, throw the ball between you and your friend and reward your dog with treats for following your command to come to you when you call it and the ball is coming towards you.
The dog will play chase the ball and follow your command as it gets well paid for doing what you have asked.

Over some time the dog will return to you when you call as it knows it will be paid for coming back to you, because you ALWAYS give it rewards.
Then the ‘Recall training’ is complete.
