With the right information, you will be able to choose the correct diamond to match your individual flair and financial situation.

Of all the valuable stones, not a single one matches the diamond by way of its beauty, romance, intrigue and vibrant history. In fact, diamonds have been firmly planted in legend for thousands of years: history says that Cupid's arrows were made with diamonds. Regardless of the fable, it remains true today that diamonds are the unparalleled symbol of adoration.

People buy diamonds for a wide range of individual reasons, but there are some universal truths that you can't go past when thinking about buying a diamond.

They are beautiful. A diamond sparkling in the sun is a breathtaking event. Diamonds are a marker of success and can build upon the beauty of the wearer.

Diamonds are durable. Contrasting some inferior items of jewellery that can dull, mark or blacken over time, you can be confident that your diamond will look as gorgeous in fifty years' time as it does today. Diamonds are the strongest material known to man and because of that fact, it means that your great-great grandchildren will be able to cherish your diamond as much as you will right now.

Diamonds are rare. From the mountains of raw material that is processed every day, only the smallest amount will end in a diamond of true rarity

What you need to know when choosing a diamond

All diamonds are not made equal. In actual fact, you can place four diamonds of the same size in line with one another, and although they may appear very similar to one another, there can be worlds of difference in terms of value and price.

There are four factors that will help you when purchasing a diamond. They are called the four C's - cut, colour, clarity and carat weight. It is the mix of these factors that decides upon the value of the diamond-- not only the carat size.

Cut:It is only when a skilled jeweller that is experienced in preparing diamonds is a stone's true exquisiteness shown. A diamond is often cut on fifty-eight58 individual facets on precise angles to show what connoisseurs often call the gem's "inner fire". A expertly cut diamond will take the rays of light that enters any of the facets and shine it back out through the apex of the gem.

Colour: Although diamonds often first look to be absolutely see-through, or "white", almost all have some hue, mostly yellow. Diamonds that are absent of colour are incredibly rare, and as a result are the most prized diamonds you can buy.

'Fancy' diamonds are growing in popularity and these extremely rare stones come in a variety of individual colours including pink, brandy and champagne.

Clarity: Diamonds have undergone an arduous journey of millions of years under the earth's surface, being created under extreme heat and pressure. As a result, almost all diamonds will have tiny imperfections known as inclusions that become a part of the unique character of the gem.

You shouldn't believe that a diamond must be free from inclusions in order for it to be valuable, though. The tiny imperfections in a diamond become a part of its unique character and most inclusions don't interfere with the passage of light through the diamond. The less inclusions that the diamond has will make the gem increasingly valuable.

Carat Weight: A diamond's size is weighed in carats and each carat equals one hundred points. e.g. 75 points (0.75ct) equals 3/4 of a carat

What do you need to to to keep your diamond looking its best?

Daily wear and tear can take its toll on your precious ring. Although almost impossible to corrupt, your diamond can lose its luster with the build up of oils, moisturizers, make-up and day-to-day dirt. While you can restore your diamond yourself with cloudy ammonia, hot soapy water and a soft brush, it is strongly advised that you have your diamond professionally cleaned by your diamond technician every six months.

Your ring will surely increase in value as the commodity prices prices of precious metals and diamonds continue to increase. As such, as well as regularly restoring your ring, you should also take your diamonds to be valued every 1-2 years by a professional jewellery insurance valuer.
