Quick and Easy Tips for Organizing the Office

By: James Stutton

If you wear an ID badge at work, an ID holder is a must-have office item. ID card holders can be worn around the neck or can be placed on your desk or pinned to your cork board. By using an ID holder, you give your ID badge a safe home, and you clear this much-used item off your desk. You also eliminate the need to rifle through your desk drawer to find your ID when you have at least one ID card holder in your office space.

ID card holders are one small way to organize; quick and simple! Sometimes the small items are what make the biggest difference. To keep your desk clutter free, find caddies that will fit into drawers to hold small items such as pens, clips and staples. Make sure file folders are in good condition and marked properly. To keep your desktop clean and free of clutter, make use of in and out boxes for important papers.

An easy way to clear off your desktop is to step back and take a good look at it. While looking at your desk, take note of each item that is in front of you and ask yourself "Does that need to be here?" One by one, remove items from the desktop that don't absolutely need to be within immediate reach. That stapler? If you use it several times a day, then yes, you may want to keep it right on the desktop. However, if you only use that item once a week, it could very well be moved to a caddie in your desk drawer.

If you have furniture that is larger than what is really needed, and you have to move it or climb over it to get to your desk, it needs to be moved or traded out for a smaller piece. For instance, if you have an office that contains a table other than your desk, but you have to shimmy past it every time you enter or leave your desk, your space may be cleaner and less stressful without that piece.

In creating the ideal workspace, functionality it paramount. Without the right functionality, you will not be able to be as productive as you would like to or need to be. Following even a tip or two, you can easily create a more functional workspace.
