By: Raj Flak

Quad bikes are marvelous vehicles but they are also risky if you don’t take the proper caution when using it. There have been countless ATV accidents every year which is starting to alarm the public. The accidents cause the people to question the safety of these four-wheeled machines. Because it is slowly being legalized for road use in many countries, ATV manufacturers have started to add many features that are usually found on other modes of land transportations. China which is the leading manufacturer of quad bikes even install complete features on kids ATV’s –the 50cc ATV’s.

Today, most quad bikes, may it be for kids or adults have the look and the feel of a vehicle designed for legal road driving although many of the products still lack proper documentation for public use. Teenagers prefer quad bikes because of its cool looks and amazing throttle power. Majority of parent groups still believe that ATV’s should only be used for private use like off road driving in open empty spaces like farm lands and the like.

Either you are buying a quad bike for off road driving or road legal runs, it is still best to buy brand new ATV’s than used ones. If you are selling your quad bike on the other hand, make sure all the parts are still properly maintained and in good condition. You should be honest enough in informing the buyer about the problems that you usually encounter with some of the parts of the quad bike. If the brake systems falter after a few months of use then the buyer has the right to know that so he or she can decide whether to replace the brake system right after buying it from you. You don’t want to be blamed for an accident, do you?

As a buyer, it is a must that you do a test drive first for either new or used quad bikes. If you already own one, be sure to check the engine regularly so you can monitor the water level, oil, coolant and petrol. Do this as well before you start a driving expedition on private lands or public roads. Always check the cooling system of the engine which is normally present in a 4 stroke quad bike. The most important system in the ATV that you must check before driving is the brake system. See if the brake fluid still has a good level in the reservoir for maximum braking performance.

Do routine checks also for the ignition and kill switches and be sure to double check everything before going out for a ride. Kid and adult quad bikes have the kill switch that can be worn around the wrist so the engine can be turned off immediately during unforeseen accidents.

If you own a road legal quad bike, then you must have all the proper documentation like insurance to keep you covered financially during vehicular accidents on the road. Quad bikes are only fun when you follow the proper safety measures –this can spell the difference between a better ride and a bitter ride experience.
