Purpose

By: Pauline Lewinson

“The steps of the Godly are directed by the Lord. He delights in every detail of their lives”. (Psalm 37:23)

“And this is His plan: at the right time He will bring everything together under the authority of Christ-everything in heaven and earth.”(Ephesians 1:10)

Purpose has forced me to transform by changing the way I view things in my life that I once thought were important. Have you ever given serious thought the reason you are here or have you ever asked yourself. Why am I here? Where am I going when I leave here? What will it take to get me there and when I am gone what will the people behind me have to say about me or what legacy will I leave?” One day I found myself asking these questions and now I ask them of my clients. I ask these questions, because I want to be sure that I am doing what God called me to do and I want to help others make sure they are doing what God has called them to do, even if it means abandoning the things that we are familiar with.
To live in one’s divine purpose is often a call to leave our comfort zones, assume greater responsibilities, become more focused and determined to accomplish our own assignments. I seek the Lord for clarity of purpose by praying to Him daily: “Lord, please do not allow me do another thing that is not a part of your purpose for my life and help me to stay on the path that you have already laid for me.”

As, I began to hear more clearly from the Lord my purpose became clearer to me: I realized that my ultimate purpose is to give God glory. “Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age (Matthew 28:18-20).
God has called us to first be His disciples. My desire is to accomplish my purpose here on earth just as Jesus accomplished and His disciples theirs. I believe that Jesus has set the standard, the blueprint has been written and I am determined to follow them. I want to be able to say to Him what he said to His father (God). Jesus said: “I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do”. (John17:4) Would you like to be able to say this at the end of your earthly journey?

If your answer is yes, then Roman’s 12: 1-is a necessary application for you. It declares: I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God (Romans 12:1-2).
In order for us to bring Glory to our Father who is in heaven we have to understand God’s purpose is best and we must accomplish those things He has assigned to us. Statistic has shown that ninety-five percent of people are not fulfilled in life. This is sad and something is wrong with this picture. Many people today seem to be going about aimlessly, because they have no directions, they do not know their purpose in life but as my grand-mother used to say, “God has a plan for every man.” It is essential to discover that plan and execute it.

He does have a plan that is unique to each individual, but too often we have allowed our circumstances to interfere with God’s plans for our lives. Sometimes we want so much to be like the other person that we miss out on what God has for us. He has a plan for everyone today, just as He did in the days of Jeremiah, when declared, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” (Jeremiah 29:11). What a great promise this is? We can rest in this assurance, knowing that we are promised the best life, full of abundance, success, prosperity and health. This verse is another confirmation of He will for us: “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.” 3 John 1:2.

If we understand that God has a plan for our lives, we would not allow the conditions of our past or present lives to prevent us from reaching our divine destinies. Neither should so many people be dissatisfied with their lives. When you know God’s purpose, you will know your purpose and you will stay within the boundaries of God’s plan for your life. This will bring peace and joy. You will know when and how to tap into His unlimited resources, using the power, authority and wisdom He has given you. God designed it; you chose how you will maximize it. Mike Murdock put it well when he wrote, “Choice is the Divine Paint Brush God Gives Every Man to Design His own world”. How will you use your paint brush to design you world?
Your path does not have to be rough all the times. It is a sad thing to think that many people have degrees and other things going for them, yet they are unemployed, unengaged in their life work or hate their jobs because they have missed the purpose of God for their lives. If you do not know what your purpose is, pray for revelation, guidance and clarification. This will enable you to become more aware, so you are not distracted by the lies and schemes of the enemy whose job is to make you do the opposite of what God has planned for you.

Distraction is a tool that the devil uses to prevent us from the wonderful plan that God has for us. Satan, the thief, nefarious deceiver and chief destroyer of destiny, wants to take away everything that God has deposited in us. “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” (John 10:10b). God designed a plan for each of us even before we were formed in our mothers’ wombs. Therefore, we should do everything in our powers to prevent satan from destroying that plan.

Do not reject God’s plan for your life, it is only through His plans that you will get to that place of self-actualization, enlightenment or more accurately stated, the place in your life where you have finally realized that you must surrender to God’s purpose for your life and you are actually living it by God’ grace and mercy and through the Holy Spirit. This is what we must all strive for. If we do not follow the plan that God has for us, the prince of the air will let us follow his plan and before we know it our dreams are dead and have disappeared into thin air.

If we spend our lives creating our own plans, we will never fulfill God’s plan for our lives. Myles Munroe, president of Bahamas Faith Ministries Inter-national and best selling author said that, “The greatest tragedy in life is not death, but rather it is going through life not knowing your purpose”. As a Life Coach, I understand what Dr Munro is saying.

Live purposefully? What is the quality of life for us like? God desires excellence in the lives of the believers, because He is a God of excellent standards. The believers are expected to live a life in pursuit of excellence and there is indeed a more excellent way, because the Bible says, “But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way” (1 Corinthians. 12:31) Our goals should then be to achieve excellence, not to settle for mediocrity. How do we do that? By putting God first in everything that we do. “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33). “Seek His will in all you do and, he will direct your path” (Proverb 3:6).
