This is called the Ganapati Pooja or the Ganesh Mahotsav. The Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation or MTDC organizes the whole festive occasion. It also organizes events like a Film and drama festival, classical dance and music recitals, and automobile rallies. There are also other sports being organized alongside the festivities. It is the chance to see famous maestros and stalwarts give their best performances. The participants of the festival are increasing every year because there are many politicians, celebrities and even film stars that patronize it. These famous personalities never fail to draw a crowd to big events like this. The Ganesha Mahotsav is always done with great show and pomp. It is a sure manifestation of the great number of Mandals being set up here. There is blaring music that enlivens the enthusiastic supporters. On the final day, the processionin immersing the Lord Ganesha has chanting music of “Ganapati Bappa Morya..Pudhchya Varshi Laukar Yaa.” The festival’s roots are being traced back to the pre-independence time where the whole celebration started. For the tourists, the Pune festival and the Ganesha Mahotsav are synonymous. They are one and the same. Another festival in Pune is the Sawai Gandharva. This was built to give patronage to the whole world. This is a festival made famous because of the maestros of Indian Classical Music. It marks the death anniversaries of Shri Sawai Gandharva. This Shri Sawai Gandharva is a classical musician and Guru of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. It started in 1953 and has a growing patronage every year. This festival starts at night and ends at daybreak. The whole event lasts for three days. The weather was never a problem. The festivities go on come rain or sunshine. Visitors who troop to the venue are equipped with blankets in case it becomes necessary. There are even stalls that sell hot coffee and tea to give warmth on a cold night. There are many books being sold around during this time. It is also a good time for music lovers to converge as the festivities is always upbeat with loud music. Osho is another festival of Pune that celebrates life. It is held to commemorate the death anniversary and the birth date celebrations of Osho. During the festival, there are AIDS tests being held to serve the community. You would not want to miss the jamming sessions here. You can catch the festival from November to January. The Chaturshringi is held every year on the Navatri festival. This is at the foothill of Chaturshringhi Temple. This starts as dusk until dawn. There are lots of entertainments held during this occasion. This festival is more popular to the college students of the Pune but many tourists also patronize the event. Expect heavy traffic during this time.
