Proxy Settings in Firefox

By: Roberto Garabell

The first thing to do in order to apply proxy settings in Firefox is to have a proxy IP address. You can get one by searching on the Internet for public proxy servers. You may also subscribe to a professional proxy service. It is necessary to take note of the proxy’s port number and the IP address. Other information such as country of the proxy may not be relevant anymore.

After you have obtained a proxy server to utilize, double click and open the Firefox Web browser. Go to ‘Tools.’ This menu link can be found across the top of the Firefox browser. Once you have clicked on ‘Tools,’ a roster of links will appear. Click on ‘Options’ to open your Web browser’s Options menu.

Click on ‘Advanced’ menu on the Options menu and then go to the ‘Network’ tab. When you click on that tab, two areas will be displayed: Cache and Connections. Go to the Connections part and hit the ‘Settings’ button.

On the dialog box for Connection settings, you would see an option that says “Direct Connection to the Internet.” Modify this by selecting the "Manual proxy configuration" radio button. Below the selection, the text boxes provided for “HTTP Proxy” will then be enabled. In the text box, type in the port number and the IP address information. Click ‘OK’ when you are done.

You will then be directed back to the main ‘Options’ menu. You have to give another click on ‘OK’ to finish the process. By then, you are already surfing the Web anonymously through your proxy server. To turn off the proxy connection, go back to the Connection settings and change the radio button back to “Direct Connection to the Internet.”

You will be surprised to find out how much information about you as the user is being transmitted when you visit a website. When you surf the Internet, any website you go to would instantaneously determine the Operating System you are using, the configuration of your computer, what your Internet service provider is, and some more information.

A simple visit to a certain website could offer any malicious person with all the information he needs to begin a severe harm to your computer or system. Using a proxy server will protect you from a would-be attacker.
