Popcorn and Popcorn Makers

By: David Urmann

Everybody loves popcorns. It is a favorite companion when watching movies or hanging out with friends in a house. Popcorn comes from the kernels of corns. These kernels have unique characteristics that explode of pop out when heat builds up inside. Thus, the term “popcorn” was coined.

Popcorn comes in many flavors now, like butter, cheese and barbecue. It is quite expensive when you buy this in shops that most people prefer to pop their own at home. But the problem is, it is easy to overcook or burn them. Traditionally, kernels of corn are placed in a pan. The heat will then make the kernels pop. Once popped, one can choose from a variety of toppings, from caramels to the all-time favorite butter.

There are now popping machines that ensure cooking popcorn the right way. It prevents overcooking. It is less messy than the conventional way of popping. There are many types of popcorn makers. Here are some of them.

First is the Air Popcorn Maker. This machine is best used for the health-conscious ones. It replaces the old fashioned way of using oil and heavy pan. It uses less fat, good for people on a diet, while still maintaining the good flavor of popcorn.

A hot air popcorn maker works using the principle of contained heat. The kernels are placed inside the machine and covered to let the heat circulate inside until the corns pop out. If flavorings are desired, it can be added together in the corns before or after popping, depending on the machine.

The second type is the Oil Popcorn Maker. This machine pops hot, greasy popcorn like the good all days. You can directly drizzle butter on the popcorn as it pops and then straight to your container. This type of machine requires oil to cook the popcorn. The oil, when heated, pops the popcorns.

The third type is the Stove Top Popcorn Maker. This is considered the most practical way of making popcorn. Even before the invention of modern popcorn machines, back in the old days, the stove is very trusty in producing the popcorns we all love to eat. Pull out your best kettle in the cabinet and onto your conventional stove. Wait until your popcorn is ready. Drizzle it with your favorite butter or sprinkle it with salt.

The downside of this method is that it is more difficult to control the heat and therefore more difficult to prevent burning. But if you do it often, and with constant practice, it is inevitable that you will perfect this cooking method. The advantage is that almost every kitchen has a stove. Although this is rudimentary compared to more modern methods, this is a cheap way to cook popcorns.

Another machine that can pop popcorns, although not strictly classified as only a popcorn maker, is the microwave. A microwave conducts heat and can be used to cook various foods more quickly and easily. Therefore in the same manner, it can also heat kernels and make them pop out as popcorns.

The good thing about microwaves is that, just like hot air popcorn makers, it also does not need oil for cooking. Thus, the popcorns produced are healthier and safer for those with high cholesterol problems. However, the ordinary kernels seen in the markets are not suitable in microwaves. Instead, there are specially packaged microwaveable kernels sealed in special wrapping. This packaging is designed to withstand the heat of microwaves, such that as the kernels are being popped inside, the packaging does not burn.

All these machines cook popcorn more quickly and easily. And best of all, they are easy to clean.
