In the following six weeks, there will tournaments for every poker game possible: No Limit, Pot Limit and Limit Hold ‘Em, Limit and Pot Limit Omaha, Omaha Eight or Better, Limit Stud, Limit Stud Eight or Better, Razz, And Deuce to Seven Triple Draw Lowball. The buy in will range from $1,000 all the way up the to the $50,000 HORSE tournament.The Series continues on July 3, with the $10,000 buy in Main Event. The winner is sure to make at least $9 Million. This year, the tournament will take a 3 month break once the tournament is down to a final table of nine players. They will come back to Las Vegas on November 7 to play down to one final champion and the last gold bracelet.Let’s take a quick look at why. Some critics are saying that the poker boom is over. The fact that Main Event final table will wait until November to play proves the skeptics wrong. Since ESPN started broadcasting coverage of the World Series of Poker, the game has been brought into our living room and virtually inside the game. With the creation of “pocket cam” (a tiny camera put into the rail of the table that allows viewers to see the players hold cards) the ESPN World Series of Poker coverage has thrived and become one of ESPN’s highest rated shows. You may have heard it said that more people watch the World Series of Poker than the Stanley Cup Finals.So why wait until November? The answer is easy, television ratings. The November sweeps. For years we watched the final table already knowing the name of the Main Event champion. It was anticlimactic. Last year however one only had to avoid any media that would report the winner of the event for only 24 hours before the final table broadcast was on. Congratulations go out to the ESPN crew for filming and editing the final table and broadcasting it on television with such a short turnaround time. For ESPN to go through all that trouble for huge ratings, shows poker is [still alive and well.The great attraction of the World Series of Poker is that anyone can win it. If you want to play against Tiger Woods in the Masters, sorry, but you can’t. All you have to do is put down anywhere from $1,000 to $50,000 and you are playing in the World Series of Poker.
