Plasma TV vs LCD TV – Which One Would Be Your Best Choice?

By: Rose Iadsai

Everyone wanted to have a flat screen TV but not everyone know if a plasma TV or an LCD TV would be the best choice. Let us take a look to both technologies considerable Pros and Cons.

Plasma TV

Millions of tiny gas-filled cells that are trapped between two layers of glass are what the feature of a plasma screen. The cells acts like a single picture pixel. Plasma means an ionized gas and it is created by running an electric current through the cell to create an ionization of the gas. The ionized gas causes a layer of phosphor on the viewer’s side of the glass to light then creating an image.

The main advantage of a plasma television is its slim profile that allows it to be mounted on a wall. Other advantage includes Its greater and more accurate color compared to an LCD TV and it has a better black color resulting in a much superior contrast ratio. Plasma TV has an exceptional high resolution with an amazing smooth image. Each pixel on the screen illuminate at the same time that is why it is possible for a plasma TV to have both HDTV sources and non HDTV sources displayed in the plasma TV.  The ionization inside each cell generates the light and not some light source reflecting off something. This makes the plasma TV has the outstanding brightness compared to the LCD TV which uses the legacy television system. Plasma TV has a wide viewing angle making it much better for home theater where lots of people are watching in a room. And because of the ultra high refresh rates and good response time than the LCD TV there is almost non-existent motion blur.

The disadvantages of a Plasma TV are it has a shorter Lifespan because phosphors eventually wear out and will lose brightness. Though now advancements have been made to longer the lifespan of a plasma TV. The plasma TV do a better job than LCD in terms of black reproduction but do a weaker job than Cathode Ray Tube and other projection system. The main problem in a 50 Hz Plasma is its susceptibility to large area flicker. Other disadvantage includes not having a smaller size than 32 inches, you can suffer glare in rooms with other sources of bright lights, damaged glass screen is hard to be repaired and it can suffer Burn-in.

LCD TV (Liquid Crystal Display Television)

Liquid crystal display as the name states is what the LCD used to promote visual. It is made up of numerous monochromes that are being illuminated by a reflector or light source.

The Pro’s of a new LCD TV is that it is lighter compared to plasma screen TV. It can be mounted to walls like the plasma TV and it has a high degree of accuracy in colors. Progressive-scan source can be handled with ease in an LCD TV and unlike plasma TV it has no Burn-in. LCD TV has a wide range of connectivity options and lastly it has a high resolution compared with legacy television.

On the other hand the disadvantages of LCD TV are first its poor black color. Its black is shown to be more as grey. Its contrast ratio is low compared with Plasma TV. It has a limited viewing angle and depends heavily on thin-firm transistors than are easily be damaged resulting to pixel defects. LCD is expensive than the plasma and has a slow response time.

Both LCD and Plasma technology is continuously improving which in the near future would bring them closer together.
