Plan Your Whole Outfit in a Snap

By: Gen Wright

Dress, shoes, hose, jewelry, hair, bag. There's a never ending list of things you need to plan, purchase and coordinate to get ready for a big event. The shopping and experimenting may be fun, at first, but it often becomes frustrating and things never seem to fall into place. Destress and make coordinating easy by making a few decisions from the beginning.

Know your limits

Know what you can, can't and shouldn't wear. The strappy heels may look adorable, but if you'll be tripping all evening, you won't look nearly so cute. Rather than spending valuable time and energy comparing, contrasting and agonizing over every possible choice, evaluate your realistic options before you ever set foot in a store.

When you're thinking of what you should buy, take into account all the details (even ones that aren't so pleasant). If you aren't confident in your arms, check out longer sleeved dresses or cute shawls. Try not to focus on why you can't wear something. Instead, focus on why you should wear something else.

Pick a centerpiece

When you're decorating a room, you usually pick a specific piece that everything else draws from. This lets you create a focus for your design and keep your eye on your original vision.

You should approach your outfit in the same way. Whether it's a pair of shoes, a necklace or every just a hair accessory, choose a piece that epitomizes what your outfit should be. Once you have this, you can coordinate all your other items around it.

This method of outfit planning is perfect if you often second guess yourself or change your mind. By committing to a single piece and not looking back, you can stop wondering about the if onlys of outfit planning and focus on maximizing the look you're going for.

Shop only a few stores

In the rush to get everything you need, you may consider running from one boutique to another to get the best deal, best color, best…something. Instead of stressing out over which store to buy from, just pick a few department stores of different price ranges.

You may think that limiting yourself will result in missing out on that one, perfect piece. However, research has shown that as the options increase, the ability to make a sound decision decreases. After going to ten stores you may have ten different dresses in mind, each one with its own appeal and charm. Choosing between those ten dresses will be significantly harder than choosing between two or three.

Don't stress

And, finally, don't stress when putting together an outfit. With focus, vision and limitations, you can keep your sanity, enjoy your planning experience and put together a beautiful outfit easily. Try to shop for your dream dress as early as possible to give yourself more time and space.
