Procuring paintings for sale from over seas manufacturers is a subject that on the surface of it should be quite simple. With large sums of money regard it as you normally would any risk and proceed with great caution. All very straightforward thus far, usual business practice. But this is where things begin to take a few twists. If you are used to buying from united kingdom suppliers then you are possibly not aware of the level of risk involved. At the very least you rely upon a common language, local police and if everything fails the knowledge that there are a bevy of rules and official bodies to assist you in recovering your loss. I'll take a step back slightly here with an observation. If you are importing to resell then you would have shopped around extensively on the internet to locate the best prices. Your search will undoubtedly have brought foreign suppliers to your attention and the many products most appealing. The places most likely to feature will be Singapore and Indonesia. A great selection and something of a mouth watering start. The most logical thing to do is to begin looking through their websites and get some quotations. Still all very manageable. So what's the problem? Well firstly you are only viewing the ones you found on the internet, which means just the people who have the best search engine position, unless you dug back to page 20. I personally don't feel at ease with that method of selection, I would rather find the best, most suitable supplier. What I'm after in effect is a reliable supplier who matches strict criteria. If you are familiar with of The Good Pub Guide , then you know what I mean if you also try using pub listings from the internet. The issue is of independent reviews, these sellers are salesmen and will occasionally make outrageous claims to get your money. This is where the web sources such as Alibaba should be able to help with their gold supplier status etc. Instead they are just simple advertiser which will prioritize paying advertisers and therefore number of views an ad gets much the same way that Google sells its ppc ads. This is where the web sources such as Alibaba should be able to assist with their gold suppliers etc. Instead they are just another advertiser which will prioritize paying advertisers and therefore number of views an ad gets much the same way that major search engines sells its pay per click ads. So given that it's like the wild west out there what can be done? Well at Moko Art we were forced to rely upon traditional intuition and human nature. I ignored Hong Kong sellers after a terrible experience with another business and after looking at the products for sale China seemed the favourite. It was a very price as well as product driven decision but the actual prices and the seller had yet to be verified. Many many emails later the field was rapidly narrowing. This is where MSN messenger comes into its own, an opportunity to quiz the person and judge a few character traits. I'll tell you now this didn't work as he claimed to be the business owner but was in fact a simple new farmer turned sales person. The draw of the money was enough to make this guy into a raving criminal. This is the nightmare cash is king and with poor wages then the opportunity to make a weeks salary off of your commission means the temptation to lie is huge. The ultimate problems I had were product quality, they fulfilled the order but to a low standard. Minimum possible level of quality. That is where you need to focus, find as reliable a supplier as possible then ask your self what am I going to get and what can I do about it if it's not what I thought you were purchasing.
