Original artwork : Purchasing oil paintings from over seas sellers is a subject that on the surface of it should be fairly straight forward quite simple. With large amounts of cash treat it as you would any risk and proceed with great caution. All very straight forward so far, usual business methods. But this is where things begin to take a few turns. If you are used to buying from UK sellers then you are possibly not aware of the level of risk involved. At the very least you rely upon a common language, local police and if everything fails the knowledge that there are a bevy of rules and official bodies to help you in getting back your losses. I'll back track slightly here with a statement. If you are importing to resell then you would have looked around extensively on the internet to locate the best prices. Your search will undoubtedly have brought foreign suppliers to your attention and the variety of products most appealing. The countries most likely to crop up will be China and India. A great choice and something of a mouth watering start. The most logical thing to do is to start looking through their websites and get some quotes. Still all very manageable. So what is the issue? Well firstly you are only looking at the ones you saw on the net, which means just the people who have the best search engine position, unless you went back to page 24. I really don't feel comfortable with that method of selection, I would rather find the most reliable supplier. What I'm after in essence is a reliable supplier who meets strict criteria. If you are aware of pub guide, then you know what I mean if you also try using pub listings from the web. The issue is of independent recommendation, these sellers are salesmen and will possibly make outrageous claims to get your cash. This is where the directories such as Alibaba can be able to assist with their gold suppliers etc. Instead they are just simple advertising medium which will prioritize listings and therefore number of viewers an advert gets much the same way that Google sell its pay per click ads. This is where the web sources such as Alibaba can be able to assist with their gold suppliers etc. Instead they are just simple advertising medium which will prioritize paying advertisers and therefore number of views an advert gets the same that major search engines sells its ppc ads. So given the fact that it's like the wild west out there what can be done? Well at Moko Art we were made to rely upon traditional intuition and human nature. I disregarded Indian suppliers after a terrible experience with another venture and after looking at the paintings on offer China seemed the best bet. It was a cost as well as item driven decision but the actual prices and the supplier had yet to be established. Many many emails later the choice was quickly narrowing. This is where MSN messenger comes into its own, an opportunity to quiz the person and judge a few character traits. I'll tell you now this didn't work as he claimed to be the business owner but was in fact a simple farmer turned salesman. The lure of the dollar was enough to make this guy into a raving crook. This is the nightmare cash is king and with low salaries then the chance to make a months salary off of your commission means the temptation to lie is massive. The eventual problems I had were product quality, they fulfilled the order but to a low standard. The lowest possible degree of quality. That is where you need to concentrate, find as reliable a supplier as possible then question your self what am I going to get and what can I do about it if it's not what I thought you were purchasing.
