Old time radio (OTR) isn't dead. In fact, it's alive and well on the Internet. The Internet has been a huge help in reviving old time radio (OTR). After the days of old time radio were over, the only way to acquire any of these shows was to locate them on old reel to reel tape and listen to them in this format. Some kindly folks converted these shows to phonograph records and later on to cassette tapes. There was a very small group of old radio fans that used to convert the shows and trade them with each other.. Hardley anyone knew about these clubs and as a result weren't able to get the shows. When more and more people started to get computers, a number of of the more tallented users were able to convert the shows to a digital format.. They could then be put on audio CD. The CD could only contain seventy minutes of shows, which wasn't much. With the arrival of the mp3 compressed audio format, distribution was now possible via the Internet. So many people can now enjoy the fun and adventure of old time radio due to the efforts of each person who converted the shows and posted them on the Internet. Now that most of us have high speed Internet, we're able to download and enjoy these magnificent old shows once more. Now that we know these shows are out there to be had, how are we going to acquire them? There are a few ways that we can do this. The most expensive way is to purchase the shows at a book store in audio format. The CD's will play in any regular player but you only get a few shows per CD. These CD's arent' economical either. You can search the Internet and buy old time radio disk sets in mp3 format. The mp3 format is compressed. Many shows can be put on each disk. These CD or DVD disks won't play on a standard player, but you can listen to them on your computer or mp3 player. Or, you could join an OTR download club and pay a monthly charge to be able to download any of the shows they have on their website. This is cheaper and better for anyone who has a home computer. The very best way to get old time radio shows on mp3 is to find a website that offers them for free. These sites are few and far between, due to the fact that there are expenses involved in starting and maintaining a website. You have the cost of the domain name and a monthly cost from the web host provider. Plus, there is the cost of all the OTR disk sets. Due to the cost involved, a lot of these websites are only able to offer a limited amount of shows. An old time radio hobby club is your best bet for getting the most shows for the lowest cost. Users of the website all chip in a one-time donation of ten or fifteen dollars to help defer the cost of running the site and buy more OTR disk sets. After this, the supporters of the club have complete access to thousands of these old radio shows from then on. They also get access to all new shows that are added. A good club will also have an OTR conversation forum so the webmaster and the club members can converse about old time radio, ask and answer questions from other club members and ask for and share shows with each other. A good news blog can be useful too. This allows the site's webmaster to let the members know when new shows have been added to the club's website. How come a hobby site is usually better than using a download site? Not all, but some of these download sites are just a business and are not necessarily run by people who are interested in old time radio. The majority of the time, a OTR hobby club is owned and maintained by a person who's only hobby is old time radio. They are more interested in sharing shows than making a profit. This is the reason for the small donation fee instead of asking ten or more dollars per month as a number of sites charge. By combining their resources, all of the club members can listen to many more shows then they could manage to pay for on their own.An old time radio club can be lot's of fun. It's a means to enjoy and share this wonderful hobby with others and it also helps to keep old time radio alive for future generations to enjoy.
