Oistins is located on the south coast of Barbados. Also based on the south coast of Barbados is Christ Church, a parish of Barbados. Oistins is the only main town found in Christ Church. When going to Barbados, Oistins is a must to visit because it is very famous for its fishing community, fish fry meals and local fishing market. Most tourists enjoy coming to Oistins during the month of March and April because that is when the fishing festival is held. This year's fish Festival will be held between 1 March to 30 March 2009 (the date is still yet to be confirmed). The festival is expected to last all day, possibly going into the early mornings of the next day. The day will be packed with lots of activities to do including boat races, grease-pole and fish boning tournaments. The festival will also host thirty-six live performances from some of the best music artists around. In Oistins, tourists will see plenty of boats because they will be bringing in fish on a regular basis. There will be more fishing boats hauling up in the dockyards starting from November because this is when the fishing season starts. Also, because Oistins is so very famous for its fishing community, the village also has a fishing complex nearby that people can go to. The different types of fishes that the locals sell include Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Kingfish and Flying Fish. All are available at affordable prices. There is also a large shopping complex in Oistins. The shopping complex doesn't sell as many souvenirs for tourists because they are more of a local supermarket catering for the locals necessities such as groceries, DVD rental services, other entertainment and cuisines as well as hardware items! Therefore, the local supermarket doesn't really cater for tourists as such. Also, Oistins is a very good place to be in during the night, especially at the weekends. Next to the fish market, you will see lots of stalls setup selling fresh cooked fish as well as salads. The music is very loud with reggae and calypso music filling the air. Many of the locals will just go off and start dancing and having fun until the early mornings on the Oistins beach. The beach is mainly crowded on the weekends with the locals as well as tourists so if you want to experience the cuisines then be the first to get to the stalls. The cuisine is amazing and is available every night of the week at very competitive rates as low as BDS $15 per person for a full meal! Other things to do in Oistins include sea bathing, picnics or having meals on the Miami Beach. Have a meal the true bajan way by renting out beach chairs and umbrellas. Another nearby area of Oistins that all tourists should visit is St Lawrence Gap. This is the liveliest area you will visit in Barbados as it has many bars and clubs nearby to keep tourists entertained until the early mornings.
