ONLINE SHOPPING: THE NEW FRONTIER

By: Lino Torce

Even though most of us cannot live without the internet nowadays, if you really think about it, it is still such a new thing. Yet it has had an irrevocable effect on the way we lead our lives, especially on consumerism. Most of the forms of media now (television, print, radio) are already shifting to online applications, because they can reach a much broader audience than their traditional channels. It was only a matter of time before one of the consumers’ favorite past times goes online full blast. Thus, we have the birth of online shopping.
Understandably, some people still have problems and issues about online shopping. First and foremost is the security risk of having your financial information over the web where other people can use it for nefarious purposes. Another reason for people to be wary of buying their products online is that you cannot physically examine the items you want to buy, until you’ve already bought it and it’s delivered to your house. Well, that’s what warranties are for. And those are small things to pay when you consider the benefits that you get from shopping online.
The number one benefit is convenience. You can purchase a new ipod while you’re in your bathrobes and slippers. You don’t need to go through all that traffic and the hazards of parking just to be able to buy that coffeemaker that you want. You don’t have to fight over the last pair of shoes in the latest sale.
And the magic words to convince people to do their shopping over the internet: you can save money! Products are much cheaper online, even if you add the shipping cost (some even offer free shipping). The reason for this is that the merchant doesn’t need to rent a space in the mall to be able to sell their product. And this translates into significant discounts for buyers like you.
There are also lots of ways to save even more money when doing online purchases. You can search for online coupons that can give you up to 80% discount on certain items.
A number of websites exist that will compare the cost of a product across a select number of sites, so that you can see where to get the best deal. Of course, not all sites will be checked - that would be a lot of comparisons - but it should give you a general idea of how much you should be paying, and how low some retailers will go.
There are also online shops with incentives, like money back on future purchases or rewards points systems that allow you to get rebates and freebies. Often with these stores, the more you buy, the more points or rebate money you get to put toward future purchases. Many online shops have membership programs that work much in the same way as an incentive program, but it works in reverse - you pay a fee for the membership now, but you get the discount benefits right away.
So are you now convinced to join the online shopping community?
