Nuvaring Blood Clot Side Effects

By: C. Simpson

If you have swelling and pain in your leg, it could be due to a variety of causes. Take an inventory by going through these possible conditions to determine your best course of action. Some women have experienced Nuvaring side effects involving blood clots while using this birth control ring contraceptive.

1. Broken leg. If the pain is the result of an injury or accident you may have a fracture. Test to see if you can put weight on the leg. If not, you should visit the emergency room. If so, you might try the traditional treatments of ice and rest, but monitor your condition. If it gets worse or doesn’t improve in the next few days, see your doctor since some small breaks may cause pain but not complete immobility.

2. Sprain. Is the pain in your knee or ankle? Did you twist that area recently? Your doctor can accurately diagnose a sprain, and may recommend ice, rest, and anti-inflammatory medicine.

3. Deep vein thrombosis. Is your leg tender, warm and painful, particularly in the calf area? Is this condition unrelated to an injury? You may have a blood clot in the upper or lower leg.

While the first two possibilities are concerning, the third is extremely serious. A blood clot deep in the veins of the leg can cause pain and stiffness, but it can also cause a life-threatening condition. If the clot moves upward through the body, it can cause a stroke or pulmonary embolism.

Treatment for a broken leg or sprain can remedy those problems completely, but treatment for deep vein thrombosis is long-term. In fact, people who have had DVT are at a higher risk for developing it again.

Deep vein thrombosis occurs when the blood develops clots unnecessarily. These clots often occur in the upper and lower thigh and can cause the pain, warmth, and tenderness described above.

See your doctor as soon as possible if you suspect you have deep vein thrombosis. People with certain cancers or blood disorders may be more likely to develop DVT. Certain risk factors increase your likelihood of developing DVT, even among healthy people. Women who use NuvaRing contraceptive, for example, may be more likely to develop deep vein thrombosis because of the type of hormone that is used in the birth control.

If you have any type of unexplained leg swelling and pain, see your doctor. If your symptoms match those for deep vein thrombosis, it is extremely important to get immediate medical attention to prevent any possible clot from traveling upward.

Nuvaring side effects causing pulmonary embolism is a dangerous medical event caused by blood clots. These clots usually form elsewhere in the body (usually, within the thighs and calves) and travel to the lungs. When they arrive, they block one or both of pulmonary arteries and prevent blood from reaching a portion of the lung's tissue. This tissue begins to starve, which sets the stage for lung damage. If too much time passes before blood flow can be restored, the lung tissue will begin to die.
