If the pain is the result of an injury or accident you may have a fracture. Test to see if you can put weight on the leg. If not, you should visit the emergency room. These clots usually form elsewhere in the body (usually, within the thighs and calves) and travel to the lungs. When they arrive, they block one or both of pulmonary arteries and prevent blood from reaching a portion of the lung's tissue. This tissue begins to starve, which sets the stage for lung damage. If too much time passes before blood flow can be restored, the lung tissue will begin to die.
