Nine Ways to Eliminate Foot Odor

By: Kent Smith

Foot odor is one of the most common (and most embarrassing) foot ailments to suffer from – and it’s not your fault! Believe it or not, some people simply have more sweat glands on their feet than others. The bad news is that this extra sweat attracts bacteria and fungus that make your feet stink and that can lead to unwanted infections. Here are nine basic strategies for dealing with foot odor fast:

1. Air out your shoes. Keeping your shoes dry is the first step to eliminating foot odor. Shoes should be dried thoroughly after wearing them. Try removing the insole or placing shoes on a radiator to speed up the drying process. It may also be a good idea to rotate shoes regularly so that you never wear the same pair two days in a row.

2. Wear shoes that promote airflow. Shoes are made out of many different types of fabrics, some of which do a better job at allowing air to circulate around the feet. Look for shoes made out of canvas or that have mesh pockets. Avoid shoes made out of plastic and leather.

3. Replace your insoles. Odor-producing fungus and bacteria can be eliminated simply by throwing away the insole that they’re living on. The good news is that insoles are cheap so you can get a fresh start as often as you need it.

4. Give your feet a break. Allow sweat to evaporate off your feet by going barefoot or wearing sandals.

5. Wash your feet every day. It’s amazing how many people shower everyday but fail to pay their feet any special attention. Make sure you scrub your feet each day using soap and hot water. Be sure to wash between your toes. And remember: Drying your feet is just as important as washing them! Damp feet that are stuffed into sock and shoes will only smell worse at the end of the day.

6. Wear wool socks. Cotton and nylon socks cause feet to sweat; wool socks will wick moisture away from the feet.

7. Use Foot Powder. Foot powder or talc can be purchased at your local drug store. These products wick moisture away from your feet and are generally sweet smelling. Feel free to use a general body power (such as Johnson & Johnson baby powder), if you can’t find a product designed specifically for the feet.

8. Soak Your Feet. Nightly foot soaks can help you get rid of unpleasant odor at the end of the day – and they give you an excuse to relax and put up your feet. Try soaking your feet in Epsom salts or in black tea (the tannic acid is an anti-bacterial agent).

9. Spray your feet with antiperspirant. You can find spray-on antiperspirant at your local drug store. This is nothing special! It’s the same product you would used for your under arms but applied to your feet. In severe cases, you can talk to your doctor about a prescription antiperspirant but this usually isn’t necessary.
