Musings on Freedom and Equality

By: adam howard

3 notable things happened this week. One, a conservative midwestern state, Iowa, through their court, legalized same sex marriage. 2, a second state in New England, Vermont, legalized same sex marriage through its legislature. 3, it absolutely was revealed that a poll taken of Catholics found that, although church rules forbid homosexual activity whereas not condemning homosexuality itself, 54% of Catholics don't believe homosexual activity to be morally objectionable. What this says to me is that the tide seems to finally be turning on one in every of the last socially acceptable bigotries left.
Whereas everybody accepts that it is wrong to air negative views on religion, race, handicap, or gender, there are still a massive group of folks who feel it's okay to freely air their negative views about gays and lesbians. A lot of those folks seem to feel as if there's some sort of selection involved- as if a person can opt for whether or not they are a gay or lesbian. Medical research, plus many studies, have shown conclusively that sexual orientation, whether or not gay, lesbian, bisexual, or straight, could be a hard wired trait. While there are a little number who, because of severe psychological trauma, select to pursue sexual relations with the identical sex, the vast majority of gays and lesbians simply don't have any selection in regard to who they're attracted to. Their only choice comes from whether or not or not they they decide to live overtly with their sexuality or if they plan to deny or hide it. The fact they are gay or lesbian will not amendment just because they are doing or don't live openly mutually or whether or not they or society defines them as one.
We have a tendency to don't discriminate against those of color, mental or physical defect, or gender in half because "they can not facilitate it, that's how they were born". Well, guess what, thus were gays and lesbians. They're no completely different from the rest folks in terms of their feelings and motivations, solely within the gender of these they feel those emotions for. Gays and lesbians in love feel the identical love that straight individuals do, solely it's for an individual of the same sex. Gays and lesbians have the same urge to make a life with another and to have a family as a straight person does, only it's with a person of the identical gender. If their want to make a life and a family along is the identical as a straight person, if their motivations are simply as pure as a straight person's, then why should not they be able to marry simply as a straight person can?
The arguments offered against gay and lesbian wedding on the whole are weak or irrelevant in context of the laws and rights of this country. Any biblical argument, given the separation of church and state, has no worth within the creation of law. The argument that marriage should be reserved for a person and a girl for reasons of procreation could be a weak one, as a result of we tend to permit marriage between men and ladies who have no need to possess children, or don't seem to be in a position through age, infirmity, or physical inability to have children. If procreation is the explanation for marriage, then these couples should not be allowed to marry either. If we have a tendency to build the will to commit to every alternative for life and form a relatives of their selecting the prime thought for wedding, then gays and lesbians have as a lot of right to marry as straight people do. As long as they take their commitment as seriously as any straight couple does, then what possible legitimate reason do we have for denying them their right to marry?
Marriage is legal recognition of a promise created by two individuals in front of witnesses. It is a contract. So long as two individuals are old and have a meeting of the minds, then they need the right to enter into a contract. If gays and lesbians are of sound enough mind to be bound by contract in any different area, then they are perfectly ready to enter into a marriage contract as well. They are no higher or worse equipped to enter into marriage than a straight couple, given what divorce statistics have amply demonstrated.
Maybe my opinion on this matter would amendment if I used to be shown a legitimate reason against same sex marriage, however since no one has given any, I don't see how any court or learned body wouldn't legalize it. While this is often a democracy, this country was created as a republic to stop unchecked emotion from deciding the rule of law. It's emotion, and a prejudice created by a scarcity of understanding, that's standing in the way of a universal national legalization of same sex marriage. Given what this country is supposed to stand for, we have a tendency to cannot allow such emotion to hold sway over the law. We must legalize gay marriage.
