Modern Trends In Web Hosting

By: Peter Brittain

There has been rapid advance in the technologies, equipment and concepts that fuel web hosting. The concept to move on to greener technologies in all spheres of business has indeed found momentum, all over the world. It is surprising that web hosting that requires a 24*7 networks up and running, consuming an enormous amount of energy that can also be done efficiently in an environment-friendly manner. These initiatives are now in early stages and are not available for a majority of web masters. These web hosts use renewal energy like solar or wind generated power to run their systems. There is a concerted effort in the developed world to move towards energy sources that leave the least carbon footprints.

The hardware is obviously the culprit behind energy consumption. However, this is expected to ease out, since faster and cheaper processors are produced at a quicker pace. The better the processing speed, the lesser is the energy consumed. Faster processing speeds may also reduce the amount of energy wasted due to slower networks and server crashes. Web hosts also offer to provide free operational software for clients, who sign up for their services.

The leading players in the web hosting business have taken a step forward, to achieve the aim to become carbon neutral. Servers are located at a fixed place and require a fixed amount of power everyday. This helps to incorporate systems that can neutralise this demand with a fixed source of energy. The other efforts include aiming for a paperless office and buying carbon credits.

Green web hosting proves to be a boost for small and medium businesses, who have to maintain a round the clock ecommerce website. The carbon footprints due to the presence of multiple servers cannot be easily erased by such businesses. The server has to be running, even when the business may be closed after office hours. The initial investment for eco-friendly energy sources to run a few servers may not be feasible. Rather, it makes better sense to avail of a web hosting service provider, who has enough earnings to set up the required equipment and provide for an up and running server. The client only has to neutralize carbon footprints generated during office hours.

Another concept that was intended to increase server efficiency and memory space has indirectly proven to be energy efficient and contribute to lesser energy consumption. This is the method known as virtualization, where the memory available over a network of servers is commonly used to serve websites that may require additional memory or processing speed. On an average the disk space available on servers are used to a minimum capacity, leaving out the majority of it idling away. The establishment of well coordinated network of servers provide a compounded disk space of huge proportions. This avoids the need to install spare servers to deal with spikes in Internet traffic. Utilizing available capacity to its maximum naturally reduces the power consumed by installing another server. This concept is expected to become even more efficient with advancement in processor quality. The next step is the development of softwares that enable quick processing and data transfer. Sceptics argue that better performing softwares happen to be bulky and take up enormous space. However, over a period of time, such softwares can significantly contribute to saving energy waste. Advanced softwares can simply web design, maintain and upgrade procedures, thus consuming far less energy.
