Merits and Demerits of Using Solar Energy

By: Marcus5 Johnson5

Solar power is one of the most freely available energy resources on earth. Electricity generated using this power is eco friendly as it does not emit any harmful gases. Generally sunlight is converted into electricity using either photovoltaic or concentrated solar power.

Commercial solar power also referred to as CSP was developed for the first time in the year 1980 by installing the largest power plant in California. This is perhaps the largest plants ever to be installed across the globe. Solar power as we all call it is an intermitted source of energy and hence in most cases is supplemented by other forms of energy.

Besides being a free source of energy, there are numerous other benefits associated with using solar energy. Some of these benefits have been dealt with below:

• Since this energy is freely available in abundance, it saves a lot of your energy. After the initial investment you can recovery every single penny invested within a very short span of time. Financial incentives are also offered from government in order to lower your investment costs.

• This energy is not affected by demand supply since it is ever available. Unlike other forms of energy, solar energy is not hazardous as it does not emit any harmful gases.

• When electrical energy is generated from solar power, it does not release any gases like carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, sulphur dioxide and mercury that can lead to suffocation or even cause global warming.

• Solar power can be efficiently used for running all your home appliances hence it is sure to help you cut down your electricity bills.

• Solar energy systems operate individually and do not require any other fuels for ignition. This helps you to install them almost in any location of your choice.

• By using solar energy, you would be able to reduce your dependence on other centralised sources of power.

• Maintenance costs are also nil. So all you would spend is little amount on its initial installation.

• Another major benefit of generating electricity using solar energy is that it allows you to add as many solar panels as you would require depending on your future needs.

Every coin has two sides and so is the case with solar power. Now that we have dealt with the benefits associated with using this energy, let us now look at the demerits or disadvantages of using solar power.

• Although maintenance costs are negligible, initial cost of installing this system is pretty high. The main reason behind these high costs is the cost of semi conducting material used for in this system.

• In comparison to other non renewable forms of electrical energy, solar energy is costly.

• Place could be another major constraint in the process of installing solar energy system. The solar panels used in these systems require huge floor space for their installation.

• Production of solar power is dependent on other factors like clouds and pollution levels in the air.

However this system tends to have huge demand mainly because its merits surpass its demerits.
