What is a slum? A place where poor people mostly people below the poverty line reside. These people experience the worst conditions of sanitation and health imaginable. Add to this is the conflicting definitions of poverty line people around the world. In the US to quote, Poverty line people are those people who do not have enough money to pay the rent, eat a healthy meal and so on. In India, a person living below the poverty line is someone who can't afford one square meal a day. In such a depressing state education plays absolutely no role, or so it may seem. In reality, education is the only means of escape for these deprived children of India's slums. It is only quality education for slum children, which will stop this self-perpetuating cycle of poverty. How can these slum children, access quality education? They can access quality education only if the government or some NGO is willing to provide them with the same. So let us see the role of the government in providing quality education for slum children. The government can at the least, revamp its system of slum education. The poor quality teachers can he replaced with better-trained personnel. Their English speaking skills can be, worked on. Since English is a global language. The next problem of under staffing must be, addressed. These teachers are unable to handle the large amount of students. A case in point is this revealing statistics that the average proportion of a corporation teacher to her/his students is 1:60. Thus evidencing that under staffing is a problem to be addressed. In order to do so, the government could increase the perks, of teachers working in slum educational institutions to attract more teachers to this eschewed sector. Finally, the issue of flawed text books must be solved. This can be, done easily by consulting educationists for their recommended subjects. This is the only way to provide quality education for slum education. What now is the work of NGOs in this matter? One, to facilitate access to quality education for slum children by raising sponsors through awareness, two, to act as a watch-dog ensuring that the government fulfils its promises. So on raising sponsors the NGO can arrange awareness programs, can take out peaceful demonstrations and carry out street plays in raising support for their cause. It is no secret, that the state of private education institutions in this country is vastly superior to that of the government institutions with regard to the education provided and infrastructure. (I am yet to see quality infrastructure in a government school.) So to encourage the enrolment in a private school where quality education for slum children is provided needs money. The best way to raise funds is through the above mentioned methods. Secondly, the need to monitor the activities of the government is vital for accountability of the government. Hence, if the public intends to monitor the actions of the government then a watch-dog is necessary. Therefore, in conclusion in order to provide quality education for slum children the government should work hand in hand with NGOs.
