Making the best of a backpacking holiday

By: Mark Bright

Before setting off on your globetrotting adventures, there are a quite a number of things that you can do that will help you to make the most of your trip, from a financial and a personal perspective. Here are a few handy hints and tips:

• Find out some facts about your home country before you go. The internet is a good place to look. You’ll find over time that a lot of conversations with fellow travellers and locals seem to start off this way.
• If you intend staying in a lot of hostels, get yourself a backpacker card such as a VIP or an HI. These entitle you to around a dollar or a pound off per night in most hostels.
• Some hostels offer free transport from airports, train stations and bus stations. Check online before you arrive, as it could save you a lot of hassle and money.
• Shop around for the best deals on international phone cards, as some of these are, shall we say, better value than others. When making a connect call, it is almost always cheaper to pay for the local call with hard currency, rather than using the free phone number on the card, which in reality is anything but, as the money for the local call – and more – is taken off the credit on your card.
• Get yourself to the local library. There’s always plenty to read, and a lot of them allow you to use their internet connected PCs for free or a small surcharge. Also, most libraries have a large travel section to help you plan out your next move.
• Keep your spirits up. You may never get another chance to travel around like this again, so pack up your troubles and concentrate on talking to people, learning about your surroundings, and most of all enjoying yourself!
• Take advantage of the free food shelf in the hostel. People often leave behind items such as bags of pasta or rice that they can’t be bothered carrying about. If you’ve been travelling long enough to be running out of money, these can make the difference between eating and going hungry.
